Black Flag Squad belonged to the 35th Mecha Squadron of the Seventh Rapid Response Fleet, designation 001.
The 35th Mecha Squadron commanded three Mecha Teams. Black Flag Squad was its core main force and had always served as the squadron's vanguard spearhead, so its casualty rate was the highest.
Wang Chen, who had newly joined the squad, was taking over the ranger role in Black Flag Squad.
Within a Mecha Team, rangers were a very special presence. Their position was akin to a libero on a ball team, or a hunter-soldier on the battlefield. They were independent individuals and did not fall entirely under the captain's command.
In terms of authority, a ranger ranked only half a level below the squad captain, equal to the vice-captain and above ordinary members.
Within the tactical system, rangers also had an exceptionally high degree of freedom. They could determine their own role according to the battle situation.
They could provide support, charge into the fray, or advance and retreat largely at their own discretion.
Because of the role's special nature, a ranger had to be an elite mech pilot. Only then could they truly become an asset to the squad rather than someone who dragged it down.
That was why Lieutenant Carter had been so furious when he first saw Wang Chen.
Better a godlike opponent than pig-like teammates. If the ranger was a pig, then dragging Black Flag Squad down and getting them all killed was entirely possible.
But when he learned that Wang Chen was an A-Class Combatant, his attitude immediately made a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree turn.
After the brief welcome procedure was complete, Lieutenant Carter first introduced Wang Chen to Black Flag Squad's other nine members.
What surprised Wang Chen was that there were actually two female mech pilots in this Mecha
