Senior detectives could even be assigned an assistant officer.
And a detective's authority extended far beyond that.
Detectives had the authority to handle cases independently and were qualified to direct officers in assisting with investigations and inquiries.
Most importantly, detectives could carry firearms on them at all times. Unlike officers, who had to return their weapons to the armory after work, this greatly increased their personal combat ability.
Detectives also enjoyed more freedom than officers. As long as they were not handling an important case, they could take two days off each week.
