The great battle had only just subsided when batches of Guard Hall disciples appeared.
The Yunyang Sect outer sect governed a hundred thousand disciples and had more than a dozen halls.
Among them, the War Hall, Guard Hall, and Punishment Hall were the strongest.
The War Hall was primarily responsible for fighting external campaigns.
The Guard Hall managed the entire outer sect, including the safety and order of the three immortal cities.
Like the police who showed up at the end of an action movie, they sealed off the battlefield and drove away the onlookers.
At the same time, they treated the wounded and collected the bodies.
Some Guard Hall disciples also began digging through the place where the Insect Giant had been slain.
After circling in the air for a while, the Yunyang flying ship headed back the way it had come.
It quickly vanished from sight.
Wang Chen quietly left the small hillock and returned home.
His home was more than ten li from where the battle had erupted, so it had not been affected.
His Spirit Fields were all safe and sound as well.
Yet Wang Chen's heart was far from calm.
This brief yet brutal battle had made him keenly aware of the dangers of the immortal world.
It had also made him truly understand just how small and fragile he was.
Wang Chen did not become fearful or cowardly because of it.
Though his heart was filled with confusion and unease, his conviction to grow stronger became even firmer.
With a thought, the Sword Light branded into his Divine Soul abruptly illuminated his Sea of Consciousness.
Wang Chen drew a long breath and immediately activated the Mana in his Dantian.
He suddenly pointed at the oil lamp on the table and shouted, "Rise!"
His Divine Soul drew forth his Mana and released it. The oil lamp three feet away trembled violently, then slowly floated into the air.
Object Manipulation Technique (Beginner): 0/100
The Object Manipulation Technique had reached the beginner level!
Wang Chen moved his fingers, and the oil lamp hanging in midair swayed from side to side.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
The sun set, and night quietly enveloped the land.
Wang Chen carried that day's dinner to the table, ready to comfort his stomach.
No matter how hard life was, he still had to fill his belly.
Bang! Bang!
Just then, someone suddenly pounded hard on the courtyard gate outside.
Xiao Bai, who had been about to feast heartily, was so startled that he darted beneath the table.
Who was it?
Wang Chen helplessly set down his chopsticks and went to open the gate.
But the moment he opened it, a powerful stench of alcohol rushed into his face, nearly knocking him over on the spot!
"Grandpa Sun?"
Wang Chen covered his nose and took half a step back. "What happened to you?"
The one banging on the gate was Old Sun.
The old man's eyes were bleary with drink, his face flushed purple-red, and he looked as though he could barely stand.
That afternoon, Old Sun had also gone to watch the excitement and had even urged Wang Chen to come along.
Though Wang Chen had never thought much of the old fellow who loved taking advantage of others, he was still quite relieved to see that he was safe and sound.
After all, since crossing over into this utterly unfamiliar world, the person Wang Chen knew best was the old man before him.
Yet Old Sun showed none of the joy of surviving a disaster. His drunken face was full of dejection.
"I'm fine."
Old Sun waved a hand and stared straight at Wang Chen. "I just want to talk with you for a bit."
He held a wine gourd in his other hand.
Wang Chen sighed. "Come in."
Seeing the old man in such a state, Wang Chen could hardly turn him away.
So he moved a small wooden table into the courtyard, then brought over two wooden stools and a new set of bowls and chopsticks.
Old Sun sat down, grabbed a slice of braised meat, and stuffed it into his mouth, chewing carelessly a few times.
As he chewed, tears began to stream down his face.
"Doggy, do you know?"
Old Sun said sorrowfully, "Old Lu is dead. I watched him die right in front of me. I wanted to save him, but..."
Wang Chen was speechless.
He knew Old Man Lu. He had even gone to the man's spirit field before to clear out Earth Rhinoceroses.
He had never expected him to die just like that.
"I shouldn't have asked him to go."
Old Sun filled his bowl with wine, then drained it in one gulp.
His gaze grew even more vacant. "People can't be greedy. How could the sect's bargains be so easily taken? I was muddleheaded, and so was he. My luck was a little better. He was unlucky..."
"This isn't my fault. I didn't want this. I truly never meant to!"
He gulped down wine as he rambled on and on.
Without caring whether Wang Chen was listening.
Once he had finished an entire gourd of wine, Old Sun's head toppled onto the tabletop.
He had only been drinking ordinary Rice Wine, not spirit wine. By rights, it should not have been enough to make him drunk.
Yet as long as one truly wished to get drunk—
Even a Qi Condensation cultivator, or even a Golden Core True Person, could drink themselves into unconsciousness.
Old Sun had come to Wang Chen's place to drown his sorrows. Clearly, he wanted to vent the guilt and terror buried inside him.
Wang Chen did not know what to say.
Pitiful people always had something hateful about them.
In the memories the original owner had left Wang Chen, this old man had been greedy, miserly, and lecherous, taking advantage of him often because he was young.
But on the other hand, Old Sun had taught the original owner quite a bit about Cultivating Spirit Fields.
Even if his motives had not been pure, it had still been genuine help.
After Wang Chen transmigrated here, he had not given the man much of a pleasant face.
Yet Old Sun did not seem to hold any grudge.
He had even worked with Wang Chen and earned a few Spirit Stones.
All in all, this old man was no good-hearted fellow, but neither was he an utterly depraved villain.
As for the bearing and demeanor of an immortal cultivator, there was not the slightest trace of either in him!
Of course, Wang Chen could not simply leave the old man here. He had no choice but to help him up and carry him on his back.
Then he took him home.
Wang Chen only had a single bed in his own house, so he had no way to let him stay the night.
Fortunately, Old Sun's home was only a little over two hundred steps away.
When Wang Chen carried him over, he saw that the courtyard gate was still open.
After laying the old man on the bed in the bedroom, he thoughtfully propped up his pillow.
Just as Wang Chen was about to turn and leave, his wrist was suddenly seized tightly.
Old Sun, lying on the bed, had actually opened his eyes. Trembling, he said, "Don't believe it, don't..."
Wang Chen froze. "Don't believe what?"
"No."
Old Sun closed his eyes again and muttered, "It's not my fault, it's not..."
Wang Chen paid it no mind, taking it as drunken nonsense.
He freed himself from Old Sun's grip and quietly left the room.
Closing the door behind him.
Clear, lonely moonlight streamed through the window and fell across Old Sun's gaunt body.
He lay motionless, as though dead.
Then, suddenly, the shadow cast by the window and door onto the floor trembled.
It began to twist and distort.
Gradually, the black shadow kept stretching toward the wooden bed, like a long, long tentacle.
Carrying an indescribable, sinister strangeness.
The tentacle wriggled up along the bedpost, slowly approaching the pillow.
It actually stretched toward Old Sun's left ear!
Dong~
Just then, a deep, far-reaching toll of a bell rang into the room.
It was Dog Hour.
The black tentacle, just about to burrow into Old Sun's ear, instantly began to emit a wisp of gray smoke.
As though it had touched a red-hot iron, it swiftly recoiled, returning to its original position in the blink of an eye.
There were no further abnormalities.
Bang!
A gust of wind blew in, and the open window swung before slamming shut.
Blocking the moonlight outside!
