Law was Dao.
Dao came in many forms, and the Great Dao was one of the highest levels, encompassing the workings of the entire universe.
Swearing an oath to the Great Dao meant it would be recorded by the Great Dao. Once the oath was broken, punishment would follow. This was what people meant by saying that Heaven's will existed in the unseen.
To ensure their members' loyalty, all major factions arranged such oath-taking ceremonies to bind their members.
Of course, everything had its opposite. The Dao might rise a foot, but the devil would rise ten feet.
There were still ways to lift so-called oaths; they were not absolute.
The three Shadow Spider Society members present activated the oath-taking ritual. A Dao seal appeared out of thin air directly above the spiderweb.

The complete oath was lengthy and covered many matters, chiefly obedience to orders and never betraying the organization.
Once the oath had been fully recited, all the words flashed once before vanishing along with the Great Dao Seal, merging into the unseen.
