Background / History
Zhao Yarou concealed her true disposition for more than ten years by posing as a good girl. Ye Lang identified her extreme ambition through counter-psychology questions, prompting her to admit that she feared losing her inheritance rights and had prepared to seize the throne at any cost. 105 106
She engineered the spy-scout crisis, leaked information to selected parties, and used the resulting instability to stage her coup. During the seizure of power, she poisoned the gathering with Seven Day Death poison, activated a Magic Restriction Array to strip those present of Magic and Battle Qi, and demanded their submission. 104 105
Although Zhao Yarou publicly appeared to have murdered the Xiangkong Emperor, he was later revealed to have survived. She had confined him and other imperial relatives within their former palace residences using an Alchemy Array that isolated them from the outside world. 104 774
After becoming Empress, Zhao Yarou blamed her opponents for the Emperor's death and ordered a merciless siege against Ye Lang's escaping group. Her early reign relied on harsh methods, but within one or two years Xiangkong had largely lost its dissenting voices and developed popular support for her governance. 116 463
Years later, she encountered Ye Lang while he was disguised as the Fox Family youth “Ford Fox.” Zhao Yarou recognized him immediately from his aura but concealed that knowledge because she was not certain she could capture him. 501 536 Her unusual tolerance toward him culminated in his exposure during her birthday banquet, after which she sought to keep him captive. 535 536
Zhao Yarou later captured Ye Lang's siblings to force his arrival at the Ancient Ruins. She declared her goal of unifying the world and intended to keep Ye Lang at her side, both to prevent his escape and to use his knowledge of Alchemy. 760 766 A spatial incident instead transported the two into a secluded realm, where they remained together for ten years. 768 772
During their isolation, Zhao Yarou gradually abandoned her empressly manner around Ye Lang, learned domestic skills, and became increasingly harmonious with him. 772 773 Upon their return, she stated that ruling Xiangkong was no longer what she wanted, saying that her earlier actions had been meant to prove something to Ye Lang. 775
Appearance
Zhao Yarou is repeatedly described as exceptionally beautiful. In later appearances, she is noted for a petite, cute, and deceptively gentle-looking appearance that contrasts sharply with her reputation. 464 759 775
- A young Empress who was not yet twenty during her early reign. 464
- Rarely appeared publicly, making her true appearance unfamiliar even to people who possessed her portraits. 482
- Her smiles are unusual enough to alarm or astonish her attendants, who associate them with behavior outside her normal cold composure. 501 528
Personality
Zhao Yarou is ambitious, calculating, and ruthless in pursuit of power. She planned her coup for years, created crises to make her ascension possible, and was willing to eliminate perceived threats to secure her position. 105 106 Her rule is marked by unpredictability: she can execute reckless suitors, exploit a noble's crime to reclaim industries, or use an enemy's achievements to expand Xiangkong's territory. 464 595
She is also highly controlled. Even when insulted or challenged by Ye Lang, Zhao Yarou frequently suppresses the violent reactions expected by everyone around her. 528 530 Her restraint is especially apparent in her treatment of Ye Lang, toward whom she shows an intense, possessive fixation. 536 760 765
In private, particularly during the decade spent in seclusion with Ye Lang, Zhao Yarou displays a playful, domestic, and persistent side. She learns to cook, garden, and care for daily needs, while retaining the determination that defined her political rise. 772 773
