The walls, cast from brass, exposed a great many Mechanical Components: slowly turning gears, as well as levers moving in concert.
The chamber's heavy copper door had been sealed shut tight, without even the slightest crack.
The sounds of Mechanical Components operating filled the chamber, continually deepening its grim and solemn atmosphere.
Ban Ji sat cross-legged upon the prayer mat at the very center, his face expressionless and his eyes tightly shut.
His cheekbones stood high. Light shone down from overhead, casting mottled shadows across his face, while faint sweat had already formed on the tip of his hooked nose.
Suddenly, a whisper drifted out of the void.
Ban Ji's heart jolted. "It's here!"
His body reacted at that instant. His lean, bony back abruptly arched, and veins bulged across his neck.
The whisper came in fits and starts, entering his ears like strange long fingernails scraping all around inside his skull.
Gritting his teeth, Ban Ji opened his eyes. Bloodshot veins visibly began filling his eye sockets.
The whisper quickly became unbroken, and to Ban Ji, its voice grew louder and louder.
His reason steadily ebbed away, while his right foot was suddenly seized by an itch that bored straight into his bones!
Ban Ji curled up his right leg, extended his fingers, and instinctively began scratching.
The itch was unbearable!
Steel Hooks covered Ban Ji's fingertips. He tore apart his boot and scratched desperately.
Very soon, the skin and flesh of his right foot split open, exposing ghastly white bone. Yet to Ban Ji, the pain this brought was like a traveler crossing a desert and dying of thirst, only to encounter a few drops of water!
But soon, the whisper rang like a bronze gong, pouring violently into Ban Ji's ears without
