"That made sense, but how were they supposed to cross the Rolling Fire River now? Fly straight over?" Yuan Ming nodded, seeming to agree deeply, then asked.
Fairy Yun Luo said nothing. With a lift of her hand, specks of fiery red light appeared and gathered in the air, condensing into a palm-sized crimson bird.
The little bird appeared exceedingly suited to the scorching environment. After letting out a cheerful cry, it flew toward the Rolling Fire River under Fairy Yun Luo's command.
Yet the instant the crimson bird reached the sky above the Rolling Fire River, blazing flames surged up from the surface, wrapping around it like living creatures. At the same time, Yuan Ming and Fairy Yun Luo saw a streak of white light flash across the sky, followed by a thunderous boom. The crimson bird was instantly struck by the white light, swallowed by the flames, and reduced completely to ash.
"This river truly won't be easy to cross. With thunder and fire clashing with such power, even with your and my strength, we would likely go only to never return." Yuan Ming's expression changed slightly as he spoke gravely.
The two then discussed the matter and came up with all manner of ways to cross the river: taking heat-resistant boats across; using fire escape techniques; even traveling beneath the Rolling Fire River through earth escape. Without exception, every attempt failed.
"Since this Rolling Fire River is meant as a trial, it cannot truly be a dead end. Perhaps we have overlooked something. There should be some sort of clue nearby." Fairy Yun Luo swept her gaze across the surroundings.
Just as the two prepared to search along the riverbank, Yuan Ming's expression suddenly shifted. "Someone's coming," he said softly.
Before his words had faded, the whistle
