Chapter 39: Captain Even-Stevens Takes the Stage
"Midgard, I have returned!"
Clad in armor, Mjolnir in hand, Thor, the Thunder God, slowly revealed his robust form from within the rainbow-hued pillar of light.
"Let me see for myself—what exactly is this new god that Heimdall holds in such high regard?"
At this moment, Thor had yet to face any real setbacks.
His arrogant and battle-hungry nature, upon hearing that Heimdall spoke so highly of a mere human, drove him without hesitation to come to Earth and challenge that person.
Even though Heimdall had tried his best to stop him, and even though his father had decreed centuries ago that he could not travel to Earth freely.
"Rest assured, Father, and you too, Heimdall—I will personally claim victory. With this undeniable triumph, I will firmly establish the throne of Asgard that I inherit today."
And more importantly, today was the very day Thor was to inherit the future throne of Asgard.
"Hey, you, the one who likes to play at being the Thunder God, please put down your... hammer!"
Though Thor's entrance looked incredibly flashy and unlike that of an ordinary person, as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., he wouldn't be so easily intimidated.
He signaled Coulson beside him with a glance to evacuate the surrounding crowd, then spoke to Thor.
"Hammer? Ignorant human, this is a gift from my Father, representing the supreme glory of Asgard. It was forged by the Dwarf King from the core of a dying star—Mjolnir, the supreme divine weapon that can summon thunder."
"And you dare call it an ordinary hammer?"
"Furthermore, I am Thor, the Thunder God, from Asgard. I am not playing at being anyone."
Hearing Nick Fury's words, Thor's expression twisted as if he had been insulted, and he eagerly defended himself and the hammer in his hand.
Crackle, crackle, crackle...
At the same time, the Mjolnir in his hand seemed to feel the insult, instantly unleashing dazzling silver arcs of electricity.
"Alright, alright, say you are who you are. But for now, calm down, put it down, and submit to our inspection."
As the Mjolnir flickered with blinding bolts of lightning, every S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, including Nick Fury, instantly drew their pistols and aimed them at Thor.
Nick Fury's expression grew extremely grave in that moment.
"What are those people doing?"
Yet, in this tense, standoff-like moment, some bystanders who loved to watch the excitement peered in from outside the S.H.I.E.L.D. perimeter.
"Looks like they're filming a movie. I caught a glimpse—the special effects are really good. No green screen needed."
A tall young man who had seen the scene just now spoke, his eyes filled with intense curiosity and surprise.
"I saw it too. That actor in the armor—his hammer actually sparked with electricity. I wonder how they did it. A Tesla coil, maybe?"
Another young man chimed in.
"A warrior of Asgard will never lay down his weapon, even in death!"
"Move aside, all of you. I still need to find that guy called Superman and settle this duel. If I'm late, I'll miss my coronation ceremony!"
As he spoke to Nick Fury and the others surrounding him, Thor prepared to go challenge Superman with his hammer in hand.
"Stop right there. Put down your weapon immediately, or we will open fire!"
Nick Fury naturally wouldn't let this unknown figure just walk away.
After all, no one knew what kind of chaos he might bring to Earth.
"A bunch of annoying pests!"
Surrounded by a crowd that wouldn't let him leave and pointing strange things at him, Thor instantly grew furious.
The next moment, he raised Mjolnir high.
A thick layer of dark clouds gathered in the sky above, nearly blotting out the entire earth.
Thunder raged and lightning coiled within the clouds, like a terrifying apocalypse descending.
"Oh no, it's thundering! Hurry home and get the laundry!"
Some clever bystanders who sensed trouble had already fled the area.
Crack!
From the cloud-covered sky, a silver-white bolt of lightning crashed down, striking directly onto the Mjolnir Thor held aloft.
In an instant, powerful lightning swirled around Thor, complementing his silver battle armor. A terrifying aura swept outward in all directions.
Like the true God of Thunder descending upon the mortal world, it inspired an almost irresistible urge to kneel in worship.
"These annoying pests should be scared off by now!"
Whenever Thor had come to Earth before, this trick had never failed. Anyone who saw him like this either dropped to their knees and worshipped him as a god or ran off in a flash.
But he didn't realize that centuries had passed, Earth's technology had advanced, and atheism had swept the world.
Even an alien would be captured and thoroughly studied.
And on top of that, every single person present was an elite agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Even under the blinding onslaught of lightning, everyone present felt their scalps tingle, as if their hair was being yanked upward.
Well... except for Nick Fury.
But not a single one of them fled or even stepped back.
Fury knew they were in grave danger. Without hesitation, he ordered an attack.
Bang bang bang!
Countless bullets erupted from gun muzzles. The elite agents' aim was nearly flawless, and at such close range, there was almost no chance of missing.
Clink clink clink...
Yet the bullets striking Thor sounded like they were hitting solid steel, sparking wildly.
"A bunch of damned fools."
He had only meant to scare them off with the might of a thunder god, but instead, he met with a fierce assault.
He didn't know what kind of weapons they held, but these mere mortals actually managed to make Thor, the God of Thunder, feel a hint of pain.
At that moment, he could no longer hold back.
Though he didn't want to harm Earth's mortals lightly, he wasn't stupid enough to take a beating without fighting back.
Well... whether he was stupid was still up for debate.
"For the glory of Asgard!"
With his dignity as the Thunder God trampled by these mortals, Thor roared to the sky. In the next instant, even more violent lightning burst from the clouds above.
Then Thor pointed Mjolnir, crackling with electricity, straight at the bald black man.
As a seasoned warrior, Thor knew well the principle of cutting off the head to kill the snake.
In a flash, a blinding silver bolt of lightning shot toward Nick Fury.
The terrifying force and incredible speed left even the director, Fury, completely unable to react.
Just as the silver lightning was about to strike him, turning his already dark skin even more charcoal-like—
A figure moved at a speed beyond ordinary human capability, appearing suddenly behind him.
He tackled Fury to the ground, the dazzling bolt grazing past Fury's scalp.
The man who had felt nothing before now experienced a scalp-tingling sensation far worse than anyone else's.
Boom!
The dodged lightning struck an armored car behind them, triggering a violent explosion.
But neither of them had time to check if anyone was hurt by the blast.
"This time, luck won't favor you!"
The lightning-wreathed figure had already aimed his hammer at them again, the brilliant glow on its head gathering, ready to fire once more.
"Captain, catch!"
In that moment of crisis, a voice rang out from the side.
A whoosh followed as a circular shield was thrown by the returning Coulson.
It arced through the air in a graceful trajectory.
The next second, a figure rolled twice on the ground, then leaped up, catching the spinning shield midair and instantly planting it in the path of the lightning bolt!
Seventy years later, Captain America had returned!
