Earth Shield was a defensive-oriented spell. Generally speaking, its greatest use was naturally defense, especially against magical attacks.
But if he really wanted to, it could also be used offensively.
The Skill Scroll even mentioned using Earth Shield to smash enemies, though it was only briefly noted. It was probably meant to give newcomers learning the spell for the first time at least some means of attack.

Previous tests had confirmed that this skill did not have particularly strict requirements for the "shield" used. It did not have to be a large, formal shield; even a small round shield or arm shield would work.
So what about a shield created by Earth Shield?
If these two skills could truly be combined, not only would Earth Shield gain another way to grind proficiency, but Shield Bash might even become a ranged skill!
