Background

Haotian and Yaochi served Dao Ancestor Hongjun in Purple Heaven Palace. Having never visited the Primordial World, they became fascinated with it; Hongjun permitted them to descend and experience mortal life. 195

On entering the world, Haotian quickly developed imperial ambitions. He viewed Li Xiao as a potential stepping stone, declared that he would one day replace Di Jun as ruler of the world, and relied on his standing as Hongjun’s attendant to treat powerful figures as peers. 195 196

His first effort to discipline Li Xiao ended badly. Haotian addressed Tongtian Cult Master as a fellow daoist and tried to lecture him about Li Xiao’s conduct, provoking Tongtian’s rebuke. He then confronted Li Xiao directly, lost the Haotian Pagoda, was beaten, and was forced to surrender treasures for Yaochi’s release. 196 197 198

Appearance

After assuming the Heavenly Emperor’s office, Haotian appears in imperial robes. His true form is a Chaos Spirit Stone. 250 289

Haotian is intensely ambitious and status-conscious. His early confidence comes from serving Hongjun and from his belief that he is destined to rule the Primordial World; this makes him arrogant toward Saints’ disciples and dismissive of figures such as Di Jun. 195 196

Repeated defeats force him to become more cautious. After Li Xiao humiliates him, Haotian accepts Yaochi’s advice to seek allies and lower his posture, though his desire to reclaim authority never fades. 199 565

As Heavenly Emperor, he is highly sensitive to slights against his throne and prestige. Li Xiao’s impersonation schemes, public assaults, and repeated use of the Heavenly Emperor’s Throne leave him frustrated, suspicious, and prone to angry outbursts. 245 250 308 503

Appointment and troubled rule

Hongjun appoints Haotian as Heavenly Emperor and Yaochi as Queen Mother after the Saints fail to settle the succession. From the outset, the Saints demonstrate their superiority during his enthronement, while the Three Sects retain practical control over Heavenly Court affairs. 235 236 241

Haotian tries to unify the Primordial World by ordering the Underworld, West Kunlun, the Dragon Clan, and the demon factions to pay homage. His envoys are resisted or killed, and even his own court fears accepting assignments to West Kunlun. 241 243

Death, reincarnation, and restoration

After Haotian beheads Xing Tian, Li Xiao kills him in retaliation. Hongjun sends Haotian’s body and head into reincarnation; Haotian is reborn as Zhang Bairen, while his head becomes his sister Yao Ji. 244

Li Xiao exploits Haotian’s mortal incarnation through the Sow Spirit deception, turning Yaochi against him and damaging his prestige. Once Haotian completes his mortal tribulation, he returns to the Heavenly Court, only for Li Xiao to continue the humiliation there. 245 246

At Guanyin’s request, Haotian personally confronts Candle Dragon over the Dragon Clan’s refusal to obey Heavenly Court commands. He defeats Monkey repeatedly and battles Candle Dragon with imperial sword momentum, but Candle Dragon’s use of Ancestral Dragon essence blood turns the fight, forcing Haotian back to the Heavenly Court. 591 592 593
