Sailing the oceans far from land, the deadly Chaotic Turbulence was the greatest danger travelers had to face—these sudden, violent magical disturbances came and went without warning, turning a calm stretch of sea into an extreme environment within moments, and each time they covered a vast area.
For oceangoing ships lacking effective warning and protective measures, every one of these traits was unquestionably fatal. Without effective warnings, ships could not evade them in advance; their rapid deterioration and enormous range meant vessels could not escape the storm zone before suffering critical damage. Once caught in the extreme weather caused by Chaotic Turbulence, a ship from the old era could be torn into fragments within a dozen minutes.
To challenge the ocean, the two great human empires had each developed advanced ships along their own technological paths. The Typhonians had recreated ancient storm relics to produce weather-warning instruments capable of sensing the scale and location of Chaotic Turbulence to a certain degree, and had developed Protection Systems capable of safeguarding vessels in extreme weather for extended periods. The Cecilians, meanwhile, built large warships from resilient alloys, reinforced their vessels with Energy Shields, and incorporated the navigation techniques of sirens and naga to minimize the risks posed by Chaotic Turbulence.
It was still too early to say which approach was superior, but one thing was certain: both were still very new and highly immature.
Thus, besides delivering relief supplies, the fleet led by Winter's Wrath carried another important mission: gather as much weather data as possible from the distant seas, along with every scrap of information related to Chaotic Turbulence. Once they returned safely, that data would become a precious asset for Cecil—and indeed for every Mortal Civilization on the Loren Continent.
Alarms rang out aboard every ship. Sailors and passengers who
