Chapter 49: Found the Organization
Unfortunately, although this group had managed to kill a Felified Human through a fortunate coincidence, their Humvee could no longer run. They could only abandon the vehicle and continue on foot, but no matter how elite they were as special forces soldiers, how could they outrun Felified Humans on foot? Before long, the remaining Felified Humans caught up with them. Faced with the savage Felified Humans, they had no ability to fight back and were all killed.
At this point, only one group from the search team remained alive: their captain, Kobe, and team members Tracy McGrady, Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Shaquille O'Neal. However, their misfortune was far from over. Felified Humans, forever consumed by the desire to kill, would not let them go. With their enhanced sense of smell and beastlike instincts, the Felified Humans tracked them in the direction Kobe's group had fled.
"Damn it." After speeding along in the vehicle for two hours, Kobe, who was driving, cursed. "Guys, I have two pieces of bad news."
"As long as those monsters haven't caught up with us, I think we can accept any bad news," Tracy McGrady said. After the battle two hours ago, he felt that his mental endurance had greatly improved. As long as the Felified Humans did not catch them, even if a hundred armed terrorists appeared ahead, he would sincerely feel lucky. At least they could die with some dignity instead of being crushed like rabbits.
"The first is that our radio antenna was damaged in the explosion during the battle. We currently have no way to contact the base." Their vehicle radio's antenna had been snapped off by the blast, and they could no longer communicate with the base. This meant they could not report the situation or request reinforcements anytime soon.
"That's still acceptable. We can just drive straight back to base." Shaquille O'Neal breathed a sigh of relief. None of them were injured, so they did not urgently need reinforcements or medical treatment. As for being unable to report the situation quickly, that did not matter much. It was already good enough that they had kept their lives.
But just as he finished speaking, the Humvee stalled. After coasting for over twenty meters, it came to a stop. Kobe said helplessly, "That's the second piece of bad news. We're out of diesel."
Military Humvees had powerful engines and outstanding performance. That was also the key reason Kobe and the others had been able to escape during the battle. But while Humvees were good, they were also gas guzzlers.
The fuel tanks on military Humvees had been modified and enlarged, and they even had an auxiliary fuel tank to deal with their thirsty nature. But Kobe's group had already been carrying out their search mission for a long time before encountering the Felified Humans. Had they not been suddenly attacked, they should already have been on their return trip, so their fuel had nearly run out to begin with. After speeding along for another two hours, they had finally exhausted it completely.
There was no helping it. With no fuel left, they could only get out and continue on foot. As for the vehicle, they would leave it here. It was military equipment anyway, so it was not as if they had paid for it themselves. There was no reason to feel bad about abandoning it. Besides, the thing weighed over two tons. Did they expect to push it through the desert? Had diesel gotten into their brains?
"Take the machine gun off," Kobe ordered his team to remove the M2 machine gun from the vehicle.
"You can't be serious. We're taking that with us?" Tracy McGrady was extremely reluctant. It was a vehicle-mounted machine gun; with the ammunition and tripod, it weighed nearly a hundred pounds.
"I have a feeling they'll catch up to us again." Kobe looked worriedly in the direction they had come from.
The terror of the Felified Humans still haunted them all. If they took the machine gun, they might still have a chance to fight. Otherwise, with only the automatic rifles in their hands, they might as well kill themselves quickly and spare themselves the pain.
The moment Tracy McGrady heard that, he stopped complaining. He called Michael Jordan over, and the two climbed onto the roof of the vehicle, removed the machine gun, and carried it away. Each of them also wrapped an ammunition belt around his body.
"There's a village ahead." After walking for another hour, LeBron James spotted a small village ahead of them. The village was rather rundown, filled with earthen houses in an Arab style.
"Are we going over there?" Michael Jordan, who was carrying the machine gun, asked.
Normally, discovering an inhabited place at a time like this would be good news. Anyone else would have rushed over immediately. But these five US Army soldiers did not dare plunge in headfirst. They could not be sure whether the villagers were pro-American or anti-American.
If they were pro-American, that would be ideal. They could enter without trouble, rest for a while, and replenish their water and food. Walking for an hour in the desert consumed an extraordinary amount of water and energy.
But if they were anti-American, they would probably end up as human meat pies the moment they entered.
Kobe roughly estimated their current position, then looked at the size of the village ahead before waving his hand. "We're going in."
Judging from their location, they were not too far from the base. The village was not particularly small either, and its buildings indicated that it had existed for a long time. If this had been an anti-American village, the US Army would likely have bombed it flat long ago. They would never have allowed it to survive this long, because in the eyes of the US Army, Afghans who hated America were terrorists.
Sure enough, after they entered the village, the locals did not rise up and attack them. But neither did they receive a warm welcome. The locals merely watched them coldly. Their so-called pro-American stance extended only as far as not attacking them or openly hating them.
"We need water and food." LeBron James tried to communicate with the locals. Because of the language barrier, he had to speak while gesturing. At last, after Tracy McGrady and Michael Jordan set up the M2 machine gun at the highest point in the village, each of them received a waterskin and a flatbread.
After taking a few drinks from the waterskins and eating several bites of flatbread, they felt much better. Looking back on the battle two hours ago now felt like a dream. Monsters like the Felified Humans were simply too surreal.
"Do you have a telephone or a radio here?" Kobe found a local and asked whether there was any means of contacting the outside world. They still needed to report their current situation to the base, and they also needed the base to send someone to pick them up.
In the end, he found a shortwave radio. It was only a rundown little village; he could not expect something like a video satellite phone. Having a shortwave radio was good enough. After some adjustments, Kobe finally found the base's signal frequency.
"Base received. Report your unit designation and rank, soldier." After calling for some time, the base finally responded.
"I am the captain of the Third Search Team, Sergeant Kobe Bryant. We were attacked. Only my group survived. We need support." Having finally contacted his people, Kobe did not wait for the other side to ask questions and poured out their current situation all at once.
"Sir." At that moment, the civilian staffer in the base command center who had received Kobe's call suddenly stood up from his seat. "We've tracked the signal of a special forces unit. They claim to be survivors of the attacked search team."
A fellow soldier treated me today, so... well... two updates tomorrow. That's all for today.
