As the officer in charge of the base, Brigadier General Talbot jolted awake the moment the alarm sounded. Listening to the alarms outside, he steadied himself slightly. "Oh, damn it." The moment Talbot opened the door, someone crashed into him and knocked him back. Looking closely, he saw that it was his messenger.
The messenger hurried over to help Talbot up. "General, I came to wake you. I didn't expect you to already be awake."
Talbot shook off the messenger's hand and strode toward the command center, questioning the messenger as he followed. "What happened?"
"General, the base has come under attack. An unidentified squad infiltrated it," the messenger replied concisely.
Talbot froze. He had considered all sorts of possibilities: a fire, a gas leak, a natural disaster, even a false alarm. But an attack was truly beyond his expectations.
