General Ross. Hearing that name gave Nick Fury a headache. This had happened at a military base, and the US Military was handling it, so Nick Fury was not at all surprised that a high-ranking general like Ross had received the news so quickly.

But he had not expected Ross to interfere and snatch S.H.I.E.L.D.'s prize. If Talbot had dared to hold on to something S.H.I.E.L.D. wanted, Nick Fury had plenty of ways to get it back, then teach them a lesson while he was at it and show them what it meant to be hopelessly naive.

But if it was General Ross, Nick Fury could only sigh. It was not that Nick Fury feared Ross, nor that S.H.I.E.L.D. lacked the authority. It was that Nick Fury knew that if he went to Ross to demand the Mutant corpses, that old fox would have endless excuses to fob him off with—claiming the bodies were military spoils, for instance, and that S.H.I.E.L.D. had no right to take them.

Though even General Ross himself would probably find that excuse laughable, and Nick Fury would not be stopped by such bullshit. But as long as there was an excuse, there was room to wrangle. Nick Fury could not exactly seize them by force; at worst, they could take their case before the World Security Council.

To be honest, S.H.I.E.L.D. had the right to take those bodies from the military. Even if it went before the Council, reason was on their side. But Nick Fury truly did not want to do that.

Because if he did, he could already imagine how things would develop.
