Whenever Napoleoni was in power, hot water for bathing was prepared for him wherever he went.

Georgiana had once dreamed of a crying child in a bathroom. She took his hand and led him away from that terrifying place.

Then she pushed open a door and entered a crude little hut. Outside was an icy world swept by howling winds, while inside there was little more than a wall to block the wind. A middle-aged man with gray-blue eyes sat in a corner, his face even paler than usual, great tears slowly rolling down his cheeks.

When someone who had sworn never to cry did cry, it was hard not to feel sympathy. Snivellus had no such problem; he loved crying.

But the people outside were even more pitiful. They sat on the ground with their heads in their hands, hunched forward as if that posture could ease their hunger and cold. Many of them never woke again.

Others reached their hands toward the horses' nostrils, hoping to warm themselves with the animals' breath. Later, when everyone ran out of rations, the soldiers slaughtered the horses. By then, no one complained that horsemeat tasted bad.

She opened another door in the little wooden hut, and this time she returned to the oak-and-hops attic of Burgundy Residence.

She went downstairs and returned to her bedroom, only to see something that shocked her.

She had once filled the room with Persian cushions, but after she came to her senses, she had replaced them with an ordinary bed. Now, a man and a woman were tightly entwined on it in the stifling summer heat.

An opera was being performed in the theater of the neighboring residence. The actress sang, "His kiss is my Elixir of Life."
