The first industrial exhibition was held at the Louvre Museum, but the visitors from Britain were very interested in its collections and wanted to visit even at night.

They hoped candles and oil lamps could be lit in the palace, preferably with fires for warmth as well, but Napoleon wisely refused.

Not long after the Treaty of Amiens was signed, a Scottish engineer named William Murdoch lit every lamp in his factory. These lamps were not fueled by whale oil, but by coal gas. The gas was fed through a long iron pipe into old gun barrels, and when the escaping gas was ignited, it produced light.

Besides being an inventor, Murdoch had once served as an assembly specialist for steam engines at James Watt's factory. In addition to machining precision, assembly also required precision. Naturally, the people of France would not let such talent slip away. After seeing the relevant reports in the newspapers, industrial spies invited him to Paris. The drawback of these gas lamps was the strange smell they gave off when burning, making them unpleasant indoors. But they were quite suitable for outdoor public lighting. The tents at the second industrial exhibition were illuminated with just such gas lamps.

Georgiana felt sad when she thought of those poor whales, so she had Leoncourt place an order to replace the streetlamps on one of Paris's streets with gas lamps. Murdoch gladly agreed, becoming the first person at the industrial exhibition to receive an order.

Andrew Meikle's water-powered threshing machine was surrounded by many millers. In the future, mills could not only grind flour but thresh grain as well. A few minor modifications would expand their business, provided farmers were willing to go to the "vampires'" homes to grind and thresh.

There was also Henry Maudslay's boring machine.
