During the Middle Ages, people liked to blame women for failure. These people were not only men, but also some women. The first victims of the Witch Hunts were all low-status women, or unpleasant old women. Later, as the Witch Hunts continued to expand, even Queen Elizabeth I had to burn a cat to prove her "innocence."
Magnificent Versailles had once been a gathering place for nobles, but when it was designed and planned, no one had considered the matter of toilets. Thus, when Versailles was at its liveliest, it was often at its foulest-smelling.
The Palace of Versailles was once universally recognized as the dirtiest place in the world. To cover up that awful stench, the nobles would rather spray perfume than dare suggest to the king that a room be converted into a toilet. How difficult could that have been?
Just imagine how you would bring it up to the king. Everyone else was talking about philosophy, art, and military affairs, while you were talking about piss and shit. The noble ladies would hide their faces behind folding fans and whisper among themselves, while the other male nobles, dressed like poodles, would "smile."
Embarrassing yourself in public would have been bad enough, but the real issue was that you might later be excluded from society for your "inappropriate" behavior. Cholera appeared relatively late, but diseases like malaria and smallpox had existed much earlier. Gathering so many people in such filthy conditions, it was a miracle they had not died in droves like the residents of the slums.
It was inevitable that the king would be surrounded by people flattering him. There were also all kinds of beautiful women for him to choose from. Otherwise, why would so many people want to become king?
