The Golden Cubit was engraved with an inscription in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs: "Descendants, may you be happy and well."
When rolled up, it looked like an exquisitely crafted bracelet, very suitable for a girl to wear.
Susanna was delighted to receive a "new toy" and impatiently put it on to play with it.
Ancient Egyptian priests did not actually go down to the Nile River to measure its depth. Instead, they built a long canal to divert the river water into a "lotus pool" on high ground. The pool, located within the temple, did not actually contain lotuses; its bottom was paved with lotus-shaped tiles.
When flood season arrived, the Nile River would pour into it, and the cubit measured this depth. Too little or too much flooding would bring disaster. When the floodwaters receded, the "lotus pool" would dry up, making it perfect for clearing away silt.
Religious sacrificial rites were also held around the lotus pool. Flooding concerned the lives and deaths of many people, so there could not be the slightest mistake.
This was very important work. The lotus held a higher status than papyrus, symbolizing the cyclical renewal of life and representing eternity and resurrection. The cubit was decorated with them, but that made it rather feminine and no longer suitable for a man to wear. Gong Saiyi therefore did her a favor and gave it to her, with conditions attached.
Having a predecessor to lead the way naturally made things much easier. If one had to fumble through everything from the beginning, an entire lifetime would not be enough. It was just that this predecessor did not seem to be a very good person. At the last moment, he had actually sold out his accomplice.
