Every night, after The Sun set, it boarded the solar barque and began a new journey.

Besides itself, there were other newly dead souls aboard, all bound to stand before Osiris for judgment.

Osiris's kingdom was sometimes called the Kingdom of Water. Besides overseeing resurrection and judgment, he was also the god of fertility and plants, commanding rain and floods.

As the son of a gondolier, Alessandro was expected to pole boats as well under the rules of "hereditary succession." He was highly skilled with a pole, so the "coach" had not made him start fencing from scratch.

Alessandro used the flagpole as though it were a gondolier's pole, bracing himself against it and launching upward like a high jumper. But rather than trying to leap higher, he used that force to kick Dullahan in the back. The big fellow was even heavier than he had imagined. Alessandro hurriedly changed direction. With a loud clang, the flail smashed into Dullahan's own back. That was one advantage of wearing hard armor.

Once Dullahan had straightened up, Alessandro continued circling him, looking for an opening.
