New kings often implemented policies to win the people's love. For example, Louis XVI ended Maupeou's judicial reforms and dismissed Maupeou, earning the people's cheers.
In theory, victory inspired people. Supporting the American Revolutionary War and defeating Britain could indeed establish one's prestige, but there was no need to cripple one's own finances in the process.
