There were many rat traps at the edge of the grounds, filled with rats caught from the castle and the Forbidden Forest over the past month. Hagrid had to keep Buckbeak from treating them as "snacks."
"Accio Scabbers!" Pomona cast the Summoning Charm at the piles of rats, but nothing happened.
"Accio Scabbers!" She tried again, with the same result. It made her wonder whether she had forgotten how to use the Summoning Charm, so she silently cast it on a teacup in Hagrid's house. It flew successfully into her hand.
"Could you have remembered what Scabbers looks like wrong?" Hagrid asked from the side.
Pomona took out the newspaper from several months ago, when the Weasleys had gone to Egypt, and carefully studied the picture of Scabbers. She was sure she had not remembered his appearance incorrectly.
"Accio Scabbers!" She put down the newspaper and tried again, but it still failed.
"Maybe he isn't among these rats," she said, making an excuse for herself.
"Then we'll wait for the next batch," Hagrid said with a smile. Then he released Buckbeak and let him feast on the pile of rats.
The sight was rather hard to watch. She turned away and looked at Hagrid. "Thank you, Hagrid. I'm going back to the castle."
"All right, Head of House."
So she left Hagrid's pumpkin patch.
Pomona liked the atmosphere in the Weasley household, but she could not accept rats as family pets. Even a weasel would have been better.
Even worse were the hairy crabs in the lost-wand storage room. There seemed to be even more of them now.
There were no natural predators for them in that room, and the environment was ideal for their survival, making their reproduction even more uncontrollable. She had thought it would take several centuries
