Just as the British Ministry of Magic had its Centaur Liaison Office, MACUSA's Wand Registration Office was also meant for people with "no prospects," but Tina still took the job seriously.
Maybe the higher-ups would erase my punishment because I worked so diligently.
That was how naively Tina had thought at the time.
Many people considered the Wand Registration Office utterly pointless. For example, the owner of the Blind Pig was a Goblin, and Goblins were not supposed to be allowed to possess wands. But the Goblin Rebellion had taken place in Britain, not America, which meant that not only did he own a wand, he owned two. He wore them openly in his bar, right in front of Tina.
Still, he wanted Scamander's Bowtruckle. Prior Incantato could reveal the spells a wand had cast, and he did not want anyone discovering that his own wand had opened the lock. Aside from protecting trees, a Bowtruckle's "use" was opening any lock. So Scamander traded the Bowtruckle to the owner in exchange for information.
"He didn't actually do that, did he?" Hagrid asked.
"Of course not." Tina, dressed in an evening gown, said, "He only pretended to. MACUSA agents arrived soon after, and we left in the chaos."
Hagrid looked as though he had been relieved.
Pomona could not understand why someone who so often exchanged non-trade goods with strangers would worry about that.
"That was when I learned a few tricks—how to tell wands apart by their woods and cores." Dressed casually, Tina strolled along the lakeshore with Pomona supporting her. "Especially that wand just now. It was made of holly and phoenix feather. Those two materials have completely opposite temperaments."
"What?" Pomona asked blankly.
"Were you even listening to me?" Tina asked.
"Of course. You learned a few tricks,"
