I jolted awake from the few minutes of sleep I had managed. Since arriving in this mysterious and eerie place, fear had haunted me. Whenever I saw the luggage left behind by my colleagues, it became even harder to fall asleep.
"My young friend, let me offer you some advice," Doctor Self said casually. "Whenever you feel drowsy or want to go to bed, hurry back to your room. Only then will you be able to sleep soundly."
I felt bewildered, but then Doctor Self held out his hand. I took it instinctively, and he pulled me to my feet.
Van Helsing tore down a bedsheet from the abandoned villa's bedroom and draped it over a full-length mirror. I looked out the window, but the sailboat that had been moving through the fog, with a huge hole in its hull, had vanished.
"Let's call it a night," Van Helsing said.
Neither Doctor Self nor I objected. Van Helsing picked up the case in his hand, which contained the dirt found in the chest aboard the ship. He had opened it and examined it earlier; it had not disappeared along with the ship.
I hoped I had not become nervous and easily startled. I was not ashamed to admit it now. I was only worried about holding everyone back.
After several minutes of silence, Van Helsing and Doctor Self began discussing what they had experienced aboard the ship.
"That's perfectly normal. Some spirits do not know that they are dead. On Halloween, we light bonfires for them so they can find their way home," Doctor Self said
