With the Disillusionment Charm, Pomona could move around the village with relative freedom. Judging by the colors of the scene, it was daytime. It should have been a clear day, with blue skies and white clouds.
Screams rang out from time to time in the village. She walked along the stone road for a while, heard a murmur of prayer, then headed toward the sound.
It was an "alley." The residents' houses blocked out the sunlight, leaving it pitch-black. Beside a stable, she found a farmer clutching his head and praying in a corner.
"What happened?" Pomona asked.
The farmer shuddered and looked around blankly.
Only then did Pomona remember that she was under the Disillusionment Charm, so she revealed herself again.
The farmer studied her, seemingly deciding that she posed no danger, and appeared to calm down somewhat.
But the next second, he grabbed a pitchfork and thrust it straight at Pomona.
Caught off guard, Pomona could only watch as the man who had been trembling moments ago suddenly twisted his face into a snarl.
A flash of bright light streaked past then. The farmer was struck and fell straight to the ground.
Pomona looked toward where the light had come from and saw a plague doctor standing there.
"Don't go easy on them," the plague doctor said. "They deserve to die."
Then he left the alley.
Pomona looked at the farmer lying on the ground. She had originally wanted to ask him a few questions.
"He received the punishment he deserved."
She heard a child speak, then spotted a pair of glittering eyes among the hay in the stable.
"What do you mean?" Pomona asked.
The child looked at Pomona with a maturity beyond his years.
"They killed Joan in God's name," the child said.
"Who is Joan?"
