"Evans, wait, Evans!"
Gryffindor's last class on Friday was Potions. Lily left Slughorn's classroom chatting and laughing with the other girls from her House, while James Potter, as usual, chased after her.
By coincidence, Slytherin's last class that day was History of Magic. After class, they headed back to their common room and happened to crowd into the same corridor as the Gryffindors leaving the dungeons. Deliberately or otherwise, they blocked the Gryffindor Quidditch captain's path, preventing him from moving forward smoothly.
"She can't hear you, Potter," a Slytherin boy shouted mockingly.
But James acted as though he had heard nothing. Relying on his build, he shoved his way forward until he collided head-on with a Slytherin.
"Can't you hear people talking, Potter?" Severus Snape said viciously.
"Move." James shoved Snape away in disgust, as if he had spotted a bug.
The bookworm was clearly no match for an athlete, but Snape did not give up just because he had been pushed aside.
"Are your ears clogged with earwax?" Snape said.
James turned around and grinned at Snape.
"Sorry, I'm too lucky to hear ghosts howling," James said.
"You'd better shut your mouth before everyone finds out you're an idiot. Your brain holds less than your earwax," Snape said.
That infuriated James. Just as he was about to rush over and teach Snape a lesson, Malfoy stopped him.
"Calm down, gentlemen," Malfoy said in an oily voice. "We have other ways of dealing with this problem."
"Your face would dirty my spit if I spat on it, Snivellus," James said to Snape.
"The secret to your survival is staying stupid without realizing how stupid you are." Snape sneered. "Even when you read, you're showing off."
