Legend had it that during the war between the Titans led by Zeus and Kronos, Prometheus sided with the new gods of Olympus. He won Zeus's favor and remained on Mount Olympus.

But because Prometheus brought fire to mankind, Zeus decided to inflict the harshest punishment upon him. Hephaestus dared not defy Zeus's command. Together with two servants, he took Prometheus to the Caucasus Mountains and bound him to a steep cliff with an unbreakable iron chain. He was never allowed to sleep, his weary knees could never bend, and a diamond nail was driven into his heaving chest.

Zeus also sent an eagle to peck out Prometheus's liver every day, until Hercules happened to pass by while searching for the Golden Fleece. Seeing this, he shot the divine eagle dead with an arrow, smashed the iron chain with a stone, and rescued him.

In Ancient Greece, the liver was believed to be the seat of human emotion. Prometheus's liver was eaten away by the eagle during the day, but grew back at night.

What did that symbolize? Did he regret bringing fire to mankind, or was Zeus unlike what he had imagined—not any kinder than Kronos?
