Damocles was a courtier of Dionysius II and exceedingly sycophantic toward him. He believed that only by currying favor with Dionysius himself could he attain wealth and glory, so he constantly praised Dionysius, calling him a great man possessed of supreme power and immense prestige.
To let him experience life as a ruler, Dionysius made an agreement with Damocles, and the two exchanged identities. After the exchange, Damocles successfully became king at that evening's banquet. At first, Damocles was delighted, enjoying delicacies reserved for kings alone, as well as all manner of beautiful women. Yet just as the banquet was about to end, he discovered a sharp sword hanging above the throne on which he sat, suspended only by a very loose horsehair. Damocles was terrified and immediately begged Dionysius to switch their identities back.
