Novara Castle stood on the walls of an Ancient Roman city. In the first half of the fourteenth century, Giovanni Visconti, Archbishop of Milan, took over as Lord of Novara. At the time, corpses from the Black Death were piled like mountains across Europe, yet Milan alone escaped disaster. This Archbishop was the one governing Milan then.

Thanks to the Archbishop's rule, Novara truly began to take on the shape of a city. At the same time, its tower was expanded and incorporated into a castle.
