Following the entrance to the Dora Valley near Rivoli, one would reach a small town called Susa. There were two forks in the town. One headed south; after reaching a place called Briançon, one could continue south to a place called Gap, then head west, emerge from the mountains at Valence, and follow the Ancient Roman road north to Lyon.

This was limited by ancient engineering methods. The earliest Simplon Road had a section of tunnel, and they had even used explosives. But before the invention of nitroglycerin, black powder's blasting effect was mediocre—perhaps not even as effective as Hannibal's method of heating rocks and then cooling them rapidly.

Another route headed north from Turin. When Georgiana came out of the Alps, she had passed through a small town called Ivrea. After reaching Aosta, there was another fork.
