Bellamy had only been a pirate for a year, yet he had achieved more than Benjamin Hornigold had in many years of privateering.

After returning to her room, Georgiana found the map of North America's eastern coast that had just arrived from the customs office. She spread it out and searched for a place called Cape Cod.

The place was easy to find. According to the national policy established by Queen Elizabeth I, Britain first had to cultivate a great many sailors. Deep-sea fishing was a good excuse for that; even the tastes of British citizens had shifted toward eating fish.

Massachusetts was one of the earliest North American colonies, so she first found Boston, then Cape Cod Bay south of Boston. It looked like the boot worn by a medieval Joker, with a long pointed toe. Cape Cod was roughly where the "instep" would be.

She soon found Eastham as well. It was also on the "boot," not far from Cape Cod, and it was where Bellamy's flagship, the Whydah, had sunk.

Bellamy had started working as a sailor on cod-fishing boats at the age of nine. How could he not have known the waters and reefs around Cape Cod?

Yet the Whydah had still sunk after being caught in a storm and running aground. Only nine survivors had been found, while Bellamy himself had vanished without a trace.

"You bastard," Georgiana murmured. Then, holding a magnifying glass, she searched for Salem north of Eastham.

In the seventeenth century, slave traders often built their ships very large in order to cram in as many slaves as possible. But Georgiana did not believe that "Black Sam" had kept all his treasure aboard the ship.
