According to The Lord of the Rings, Gollum led Frodo into a tunnel that was both dark and reeked to high heaven. At least there was air moving through Morea, with sounds echoing there, but in that tunnel, past and future alike were darkness. Darkness was everything.

That place was actually the nest of a spider-shaped monster. Gollum had deliberately led them there. Though both Frodo and Sam called him Sméagol, the name he had borne when he was still a Hobbit, it did not awaken the good part within him. He was still Gollum, twisted by the Lord of the Rings.

With a splash, a huge deluge of water drenched her from head to toe.

"Hey!" she yelled at the Giant Squid in the Black Lake. It had been the one to splash her just now.

"What did I ever do to you?" Pomona demanded, but the Giant Squid ignored her and continued floating on the surface of the Black Lake, basking in the sun.

"One day I'll roast you," she grumbled, looking at the book in her hands. It had been soaked through as well.

After hesitating for a moment, she decided to leave the drying to the Sun. She laid the book beneath the blazing summer sunlight while she remained seated in the shade of the boathouse, enjoying the cool breeze off the lake.

The spider monster was called "she" in the book, so she seemed to be female. If Arago had remained single and Hagrid had not found him a "mate," the Acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest would not have multiplied into a disaster.

Of course, The Silmarillion mentioned a great spider that had destroyed the sacred trees of Valinor. She was Shelob's descendant. This black widow not only drank deeply of the blood of Elves
