Most deciduous trees sprouted in spring and shed their leaves in autumn.
There was a white tree in the capital of Gondor. It had not originally been the only one, but after resisting Mordor's power, all the other white trees had been burned down. Only one remained in the royal palace courtyard.
That tree had not sprouted for many years, yet people still clung to a faint hope that it would flourish again.
Compared to Ents, the Orcs were tiny, almost like ants. An Ent could flatten one with a single step.
Yet they were numerous. If Saruman had not built the dam—which had originally been meant to provide power for forging weapons—the Ents could have demolished it and used the flood to wash away the Orcs. Without that dam, it would have been hard to say who would win.
"How did it end up like this?" Pomona saw the wand tree infested with aphids. Its entire trunk had turned white, and its leaves had yellowed as well.
"You're the Herbology professor. I thought you were supposed to tell me," Snape said.
The Bowtruckles in the tree were fighting with all their might, stomping aphids to death one by one like Ents.
But the aphids were fast and astonishingly agile jumpers. In the blink of an eye, they vanished. Once the Ents had gone, they continued sucking the tree's sap.
Pomona picked up a leaf that had fallen from the tree.
"Yellow Dragon disease," she said despairingly. "This tree can't be saved."
"Shh." Snape signaled for her to be quiet, and they both looked toward the Bowtruckles. They were so focused on fighting that they had not heard what the two of them said.
The aphids themselves did not do much damage to trees. However, they carried something with them.
