With the help of the Flashback Curse, something strange appeared at the tip of Karkaroff's Wand. Something like thick smoke poured out, resembling a puddle of water.
That puddle vanished at a visible speed. Clearly, Karkaroff had cast a Cleaning Charm to dispose of it.
Obviously, this was magic Karkaroff had cast recently. The Flashback Curse would replay, in reverse, exactly what spells the Wand had performed.
Seeing this, Karkaroff wanted even more to snatch his Wand back, but Moody dodged him nimbly.
The Durmstrang Champions wanted to help. They had only just touched the Wands in their pockets when they felt their whole bodies stiffen, unable to move.
Cedric Diggory, standing nearby, seemed to sense something. He blinked, but said nothing.
Moody maintained the Flashback Curse, and thick smoke kept pouring from the tip of Karkaroff's Wand, revealing traces of different spells. Among them was the Goblet of Fire.

The Durmstrang Champions reacted much the same. The feeling of being unable to move disappeared, but they were even less willing to act rashly now;
First, because they had just been controlled by magic and still could not make sense of the situation;
Second, because that cluster of "smoky Goblet of Fire" proved Karkaroff had indeed done something, and might even be the one truly at fault.
Harry thought of this too and suddenly understood. He said to Vizet and the others, "So he was the one making trouble! I knew something was off for it to turn out like this!"
