Background / History

Aizen is a “Salted Fish” counterpart who possesses Aizen’s abilities but lacks any interest in the Soul King, the Hogyoku, or grand ambition. He prefers resting on rooftops in the sun, and considers himself a poor fit for the conspiratorial reputation attached to his name 174.

He became Captain of the Fifth Division after challenging and defeating Shunsui Kyoraku over conflicting ideals. Despite concealing much of his strength, he does not refuse direct challenges; he swiftly defeated Kenpachi Zaraki in their encounter 187.

For decades, Yoruichi and Urahara treated him as a likely conspirator, interpreting his isolation, hidden power, and apparent indifference as signs of malicious intent. Aizen repeatedly denied their accusations and objected to being judged without evidence 181 188. Urahara later admitted that he had known Aizen was innocent: the suspicion had been cultivated to make Aizen’s eventual “defection” plausible for an undercover mission against the Quincy 188 189.
