The weak candlelight swayed before Xiao Yi's bed, stretching out the silhouette of her sitting propped up.
Chen Xiaojun stood in the darkness three steps away, his fist pressed hard against the doorframe, the veins bulging on the back of his hand clearly visible in the gloom.
"No."
He forced the two words out of his throat, his voice low and heavy.
Xiao Yi was only wrapped in a thin outer robe, her pale hand resting on the piled blankets.
The candlelight flickered in her utterly unruffled eyes, reflecting the strands of hair plastered to her temples by cold sweat, yet it could not shine a trace of warmth into them.
She did not even move her eyelids.
The stagnant air pressed down until it was hard to breathe.
Xi Xi twisted her fingers uneasily and spoke in an extremely soft voice. "Xiaojun... let's talk this through. Tomorrow... you have to have some kind of plan, right?"
Her gaze moved carefully between Chen Xiaojun, whose face was ashen, and the wooden Xiao Yi.
