The people who had invited Qu Jianlei over could not exactly be called dispirited. They simply had that calm detachment of people who had seen through the vanity of the world.
As for those inside the buildings, most appeared even calmer, as though they had already prepared themselves to accept any outcome.
Qu Jianlei and Jing Yuexin ignored them and continued wandering about.
In the end, however, they were stopped and questioned—it was to check their reserve unit designations.
"What the hell is the point of checking that?" Qu Jianlei muttered. "When the Alien Race comes, do you think we can still desert?"
On the battlefields of Human Race civil wars, deserters might have had a chance of surviving. But against the Alien Race...
The soldier conducting the inspection did not mind his grumbling. All of Bi Tao was now a massive powder keg that could explode at any moment.
"Resistance against the Alien Race must also be organized. Otherwise, you can only sit and wait for death. I hope you cooperate."
However, this rather lax inspection had no equipment to guard against mental interference, making it far too easy to fool.
The soldier then reminded the two of them, "Keep yourselves in check. Don't wander around everywhere, or you might be arrested as spies of the Evil Empire."
"Spies?" Jing Yuexin blinked, then asked helplessly, "Would spies come to Bi Tao?"
"Is there a problem with that?" The soldier looked completely serious. "If they sabotage things, wouldn't that make it easier for the Alien Race to invade?"
Jing Yuexin was instantly speechless. Only after they had walked quite a distance did she mutter softly, "Alliance people... their hearts are so filthy!"
As a genuine Imperial citizen, she had never considered sabotaging things to facilitate an Alien Race invasion.
