Background / History

Chen Yindu came from humble origins and possessed exceptionally poor aptitude, but compensated through intelligence, study, and persistence. He eventually entered government as Vice Minister of Rites and compiled the Heavenly Heart Righteous Qi Art as a cultivation text for scholars throughout the land. The court permitted only its early portions, fearing that widespread cultivation would undermine imperial authority; Chen Yindu resigned and became a rogue cultivator instead. 259 262

During his early rogue-cultivator years, Jing Yushu attempted to take him as a disciple but found that his own knowledge was insufficient for Chen Yindu to learn from for long. They instead became friends, and Jing introduced him to the rogue-cultivator community. 434

Chen Yindu later became infamous as the “Western Capital Butcher” after massacring the Western Capital. His assaults inflicted major casualties on the Grand Secretariat, Eastern Depot, military camps, and court ministries, leaving his name feared for a decade. He also repeatedly fought the master of the Golden Mountain hanging corpses, deploying increasing numbers of Talisman God Heavenly Mechanisms over several decades. 141 261

Although he was largely absent from Chen Tang’s upbringing, Chen Yindu changed after Chen Shi’s birth and began returning home more often. Following Chen Shi’s death, he devoted years to resurrecting him, repeatedly entered the Underworld in search of help, and eventually revived his grandson eight years later. 137 259 464

His efforts to save Chen Shi came at great personal cost. Near death and unable to remain safely in the Yang World, he cultivated as a corpse-release immortal; demonic energy continually threatened to corrupt him and cause disaster. Chen Shi later used his Yin Yang Dao Field and taught him Yin Yang Tempering to purge and suppress this evil energy. 464

Personality

Chen Yindu is brilliant, audacious, and intensely self-confident. He is capable of comprehending high-level techniques from limited clues, simplifying difficult problems, and devising solutions where others see dead ends. His curiosity and unrestrained personality made him charismatic in his youth, but also made him an extremist among rogue cultivators. 179 376 447

He is frequently ruthless and unconcerned with conventional morality. During the Evil Bodhisattva crisis, he admitted that the deaths of people within a hundred-mile radius meant little to him compared with Chen Shi’s safety. 56 His greatest attachment is nevertheless his grandson: his resurrection of Chen Shi, long struggle against the Underworld, and continued attempts to protect him define many of his later actions. 464

Chen Yindu’s pursuit of perfect rationality is both his greatest strength and greatest danger. He created Chen Wu as an idealized, emotionless version of himself and can use Xiao Wu to suppress his own distracting thoughts and humanity. In that state, his judgment and analytical ability become terrifyingly sharp, but his companions fear the loss of his compassion and restraint. 137 447 732
