When I asked that, Bingbing fell into deep thought.
She seemed to be trying to remember.
"How could I not remember? As far as I know, the child had been by my side ever since he was born."
She spoke very seriously. Seeing how earnest she was, I felt somewhat dazed. Had that earlier scene been real or fake?
The key was that it was part of my missing memories.
In her mind, Little Nian Bai had never been lost.
"Where was he born?" I asked again. I thought that if Little Nian Bai had truly been born at the Little Ancestral Hall Entrance, remembering it might make her think of something.
It seemed I had stumped her again. She stared blankly at me and murmured, "Where was he born? Where was he born?" Then she looked around my small courtyard, narrowed her eyes, and said, "Little Nian Bai was born here. I remember now, in that room."
She was pointing at the guest room too.
That was right. What she said matched the scene I had experienced before. It was that room.
"Was I there when Little Nian Bai was born?" I pressed.
Her emotions immediately became unstable. She set down her bowl and chopsticks. "Why are you suddenly asking so much? I really don't remember. My head hurts whenever I try to think about it!" Little Nian Bai also put down his bowl and chopsticks and ran to her side, gently hugging her. "Mom, if it hurts, don't think about it."
Then he looked at me. "Dad, don't ask anymore either, okay?"
I sighed. I knew something had to be at work here.
Someone did not want us to remember certain things, and the story involving Bingbing, Little Nian Bai, and me probably hid an enormous secret.
