Fujino's expression first turned complicated, then he fell into thought.
At last, he asked Vermouth again, "Are you sure the information you investigated is true?"
"It's not some huge secret." Vermouth propped her elbow on the table and leaned forward. "I'd rather ask you—did you really not know your own identity?"
"You're asking me? I wanted to ask you the same thing."
Fujino gave her a deadpan stare. "Why didn't you tell me this sooner? Didn't you investigate me? I seriously suspect you're just messing with me."
"I'm not some god who can foresee the future and see through the past. What do you take me for?"
Vermouth snorted with laughter. "Besides, why would I investigate you? You're a detective. All your information is out in the open, and there's nothing worth digging into. Even if I wanted to investigate you, could I have found out that you went out that night and killed people without batting an eye?"
As she spoke, she shook her head again. "You killed an entire organization last night, then went shopping with little girls the next morning and casually solved two murder cases."
"Who could have imagined that contrast?"
Fujino stared at her for a while. After a brief silence, he asked, "So I got dragged into a family power struggle, right?"
"I don't know about that. I have no intention of getting involved in you wealthy families' fights." Vermouth swirled her wineglass. "But the organization is very interested in this sort of thing. Gin helping out was probably to support that puppet and put him in power, then use him to help the organization control the Fujiwara family's influence."
"Who is that person?"
"How would I know?"
"Were my so-called parents part of the same scheme?"
"I didn't find that out. Probably not."
