Background / History

Yao Chen was born into a humble branch of the Yao Clan with an exceptionally thin Dou Di bloodline. The clan’s main family discriminated against branch members, and he endured contempt despite demonstrating outstanding talent in alchemy and cultivation. His achievements ultimately drew jealousy: Yao Wangui of the Punishment Hall sabotaged Yao Chen’s Pill Gathering refinement, arranged false accusations of theft, and had him expelled from the clan. These experiences left Yao Chen unwilling to return even when Yao Ling later sought him out. 243 244

He became an Eighth-grade Alchemist known across the Central Plains as Venerable Yao. After his disciple Han Feng betrayed him in pursuit of the Fen Jue, Yao Chen was reduced to a soul body and became far more guarded about accepting disciples. He later resided within Xiao Yan’s Storage Ring and trained Xiao Yan in cultivation and alchemy. 13 89

After recognizing Bai Xiaoran’s exceptional Soul Perception and comprehension, Yao Chen attempted to recruit him as a disciple, even offering him the position of senior disciple. Bai Xiaoran declined both discipleship and alchemy training, but Yao Chen remained confident in his potential and continued to assist him. 13

Yao Chen later helped refine a pill to suppress Yun Shan’s Soul Pill, gave Bai Xiaoran the Fen Jue, and fought alongside Xiao Yan against Han Feng. When Han Feng allied with Soul Hall, Yao Chen ultimately killed his former disciple. 102 103 106 111

In the Central Plains, Yao Chen arranged for Bai Xiaoran to receive protection and training through his old connections, leaving avatars to guide him to Venerable Feng and Xuan Yi. Yao Chen is fiercely protective of those he considers his disciples, friends, or benefactors. He risks himself to save Bai Xiaoran during Soul Hall’s attack on Starfall Pavilion and openly declares that the injuries inflicted upon Xiao Yan and Bai Xiaoran must be repaid. 211
