Background / History

Founding and doctrine

Shrek Academy was founded by Flender, who served as its first dean. Its central doctrine was to admit “monsters” rather than ordinary students; the name Shrek itself was explained as an ancient monster. 238 249

“Shrek only accepts monsters.” 5

Its recorded entrance standards differ between eras:

Requirement set Documented standards
Later-era admission Applicants had to be under twelve, possess Soul Power above Rank 15, and provide a recommendation letter from the lord of a main-city-level city or higher. 3
Founding-era admission Applicants over thirteen or below Rank 21 Soul Power were rejected. 238
Graduation Students had to reach Rank 40, the Soul Ancestor realm, before age twenty. Only fourteen students were said to have graduated; others either failed the requirement or died during Soul Hunts. 239

Flender refused the Balak Kingdom royal family’s demand that Shrek graduates pledge loyalty to it. Combined with the academy’s poor relations with other schools, this left the early academy ostracized and financially strained. 239

Rise as a continental power

Over ten thousand years, Shrek grew from a small academy into an institution with its own city, army, extensive resources, and political influence. It was regarded as an “uncrowned supreme ruler” over the three great empires and as a key check on the Sun Moon Empire. 3 68

Although it publicly maintained that it had no private army and that its influence did not extend beyond Shrek City, Shrek City’s defense force was inseparable from the academy, and other powers treated Shrek as a continental overseer. 3 93

During the Continental War, Shrek Academy reportedly summoned more than sixty Titled Douluo and led the armies of the three great empires. This precedent became known as the Shrek Summons. 132

Sea God Pavilion

The Sea God Pavilion was established after Shrek Academy’s conflict with the Body Sect and became the academy’s true foundation. It governs Sea God Island, the Inner Court, and the academy’s highest-ranking elders and deans. 14 90

  • Mu En — Sea God Pavilion Master before his death; he directed Shrek’s long-term cultivation plans and named Xuan Zi as his successor. 114
  • Xuan Zi — Deputy head of the Shrek Supervisory Group before later becoming Sea God Pavilion Master. 52 114
  • Golden Tree — Shrek’s ultimate safeguard. It accumulated power over millennia and could be mobilized through Mu En’s remnant soul to defend Sea God Island. 181

Campus

Outer Court

Shrek’s main campus was built around Sea God Lake. Behind the Seven Monsters statues and the academy gate lay the core area, while the Outer Court occupied the surrounding grounds. 2

Student facilities

  • Dormitories — Students from all six grades lived in a large, six-story building divided into the same four grade colors. Freshman rooms housed two students. 2
  • Grade cafeterias — Students were normally restricted to their own grade’s cafeteria. The freshman cafeteria lacked tables and chairs, prompting widespread complaints from new students. 2
  • Soul Battle Area — A regulated dueling site in the Martial Soul System. Teachers acted as referees, provided treatment, and determined results, but charged students for these services. 8
  • Assessment Area — An oval examination ground with adjustable partitions. It could be divided into fifty simultaneous assessment sections. 25
  • Beast Fighting Zone — The academy’s largest training structure, divided between Soul Beast holding areas and battle arenas. It contained Ten-Thousand-Year Soul Beasts and seating for more than ten thousand spectators. 47

Sea God Island

Sea God Island, located in Sea God Lake, housed the Inner Court and Sea God Pavilion. It was the only portion of Shrek City to survive the Rank Nine cannon bombardment that destroyed the Outer Court. 90 182

Education and administration

Assessments

Shrek did not use conventional end-of-semester examinations. Instead, new-student assessments and annual advancement assessments determined whether students could remain enrolled. Assessment content was not disclosed in advance, and prior advancement tests included challenging a Hundred-Year Soul Beast alone. 41

The freshman assessment was especially severe: only 150 participating teams would be retained as official first-year students. 25

Inner Court

Inner Court disciples were few in number—fewer than fifty at one point—not solely because of high standards, but because members died regularly. New Inner Court students were required to sign a life-or-death document and could be sent into lethal situations. 53

Shrek Supervisory Group

The Shrek Supervisory Group was an Inner Court organization whose members operated as supervisors. Their identifying equipment included the Ring of the Supervisor, a blood-bound Storage Soul Tool containing a uniform, mask, cloak, and emergency distress flare. 52 57

Relationships

  • Sea God Pavilion — Shrek Academy’s ruling body and final source of authority; it controlled Sea God Island and directed the academy’s major decisions. 90 114
  • Shrek City — The academy’s independent city and political base; the two were widely treated as inseparable. 3 68
  • Tang Sect — Historically connected to Shrek through Tang San and the first Shrek Seven Devils. Mu En stated that Shrek’s ten-thousand-year glory depended on the Tang Sect, though Shrek had not intervened when the sect declined. 114
  • Body Sect — A rival force comparable to Shrek Academy. Their past conflict contributed to the creation of the Sea God Pavilion. 14 90
  • Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy — Shrek’s principal academic and technological rival. Its team exposed Shrek’s prohibited use of Food System cigars during the Soul Fighting Tournament. 79 91
  • Sun Moon Empire — A political and military adversary that ultimately declared war on Shrek and destroyed Shrek City. 178 181 182
  • Clear Sky Sect — Connected to Shrek through Wang Dong’er and through historical figures associated with the academy; Shrek leadership feared provoking it because of its Titled Douluo. 14 39

Story Role / Major Arcs

Wang Dong’er’s enrollment

Wang Dong’er entered Shrek Academy at the request of Niu Tian and Titan, despite wanting to attend Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy instead. She registered as a freshman, entered Freshman Class One, and became Xiao Xiao’s roommate. 1 2 4

Her first term exposed several institutional problems. Zhou Yi’s harsh treatment and expulsions provoked student resentment; after her conduct disrupted Freshman Class One, she was transferred to Freshman Class Five, while Mu Jin took over Class One. 3 23

Soul Fighting Tournament scandal

Shrek entered the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Tournament as defending champion and received preferential treatment, including late-registration privileges due to its reputation and Inner Court members’ supervisory duties. 63 64

Wang Yan arranged for Food System Martial Soul cigars to be manufactured and used during matches, despite their being forbidden by tournament rules. The Sun Moon Royal Soul Master Academy challenged their use in the finals; the referee accepted the accusation and voided Shrek Academy’s results. 70 91

A subsequent projection exposed further allegations of Shrek’s corruption, its historical conduct, and Wang Yan’s role in the cigar scheme. The academy’s public image collapsed, and Wang Dong’er, Huo Yuhao, Xiao Xiao, Jiang Nannan, Ling Luochen, and other students publicly withdrew. 92 93

Rebuilding its strength

Following the tournament, Shrek rewarded Wang Yan, Bei Bei, Xu Shishi, and He Caitou while issuing major demerits to Ma Xiaotao and Dai Yueheng. The academy selected a new generation of Shrek Seven Devils and committed to cultivating them fully. 97

Before his death, Mu En ordered the Soul Tool Department to produce a Rank Nine Soul Engineer within ten years, assigning it half of the academy’s income. He also asked the Shrek Seven Devils to join the Tang Sect and restore it. 114

Later tournaments and renewed hostility

Shrek’s reputation remained damaged at a later tournament, where spectators booed the academy over its previous cheating scandal. 134

The academy repeatedly clashed with Bright Hall, led by Wang Dong’er. Bright Hall defeated Shrek’s primary team despite fielding substitutes, and Bei Bei surrendered to limit further losses. 142 143

Wang Dong’er later threatened to expose the Shrek Supervisory Group’s actions, forcing Xuan Zi to allow Bei Bei to be taken for questioning after a competition. 162

Destruction of Shrek City

After becoming Empress of the Sun Moon Empire, Wang Dong’er declared war on Shrek Academy and gave Shrek City’s residents one month to leave or be considered accomplices. 178 180

When the deadline expired, the Sun Moon Soul Engineer Corps used the Rank Nine Bombardment Soul Cannon Skyfall to launch enhanced Rank Nine Fixed Soul Cannonballs at Shrek City. The Outer Court, Soul Fighting Arena, Beast Fighting Zone, and the rest of the city were annihilated. 181 182

Mu En’s remnant soul used the Golden Tree’s accumulated power to shield Sea God Island, sacrificing itself and severely weakening the tree. 181 182

Xuan Zi was subsequently defeated by Di Tian and Gu Yuena, his Soul Core crippled. With its leadership broken and its city destroyed, Shrek Academy was declared utterly annihilated. 188
