Background

David grew up in poverty in Santo Domingo with his single mother, Gloria Martinez, a Night City medical-center worker. Their cramped rental apartment contained little beyond basic furnishings and their personal belongings; David nevertheless credits Gloria for raising him through hardship. 37 101

Gloria pushed David to attend Arasaka Academy in the hope that it would change their lives. David initially resisted, resentful of the wealthier students’ dismissive treatment and uncomfortable with becoming a “corporate dog.” 14 19

His fortunes improve after Security Department practical training. The excellence award gives him access to the academy library and the financial support needed to pursue combat education. When a classmate insults Gloria and attacks him, David fights back despite being outmatched by the bully’s cyberarm; Katsuo Tanaka intervenes and defends David’s right to the Security Department-issued library card. 37
