Your Martial Soul Is a Body Spirit
In this era, Spirit Hall's influence had penetrated every corner of the empire. Even in remote mountain villages, Spirit Hall Stewards were responsible for awakening the people's Martial Souls.
Di Hun Village was once again holding its annual Spirit Awakening ceremony. From afar, Huo Qiqiang watched Village Chief Tom lead a group of children as they waited outside the village's Spirit Hall for the Steward's arrival.
At last, a Steward entered the village. He took out a key, opened the doors of the village's Spirit Hall, and led the children inside.
"Children, my name is Su Haitao. I am twenty-four years old and a Steward of Spirit Hall. Today, I will be responsible for awakening your Martial Souls. Look, this is my Martial Soul—Lone Wolf. Possession!" Su Haitao spread his arms. A wolf's howl sounded behind him, and the shadow of a majestic wolf appeared at his back. Immediately afterward, two Soul Rings descended: one white and one yellow.
Level 24, Martial Soul: Lone Wolf. Soul Ring configuration: white, yellow.
The children awakening their Martial Souls this year stared at the imposing Martial Soul behind Su Haitao. Some were so frightened that they hid behind the other children, while others fixed their bright eyes on the Lone Wolf.
"Lord Steward, can I awaken such a powerful Martial Soul too?" one child asked timidly.
Su Haitao shook his head. "That's hard to say. It depends on the result of your Martial Soul awakening. Come on, children. Line up. I'll awaken your Martial Souls one at a time."
The children quickly formed a line, and Su Haitao prepared Spirit Hall's awakening tools before beginning the awakenings one by one.
"Martial Soul: sickle. Innate Soul Power: level 0. What a pity. If you had one or two levels of Soul Power, you might have become a decent Tool Spirit Master."
"Martial Soul: Blue Silver Grass. Waste Spirit. Innate Soul Power: level 0."
"Martial Soul: Wind Bell Grass. Waste Spirit. Innate Soul Power: level 0."
"Martial Soul: hoe. Waste Spirit. Innate Soul Power: level 0."
Huo Qiqiang observed the entire awakening ceremony with his spiritual sense. Most of the children who awakened had no Soul Power at all. This was the norm for Martial Soul awakenings on the Douluo Continent. In this world, which emphasized bloodline inheritance, dragons gave birth to dragons and phoenixes gave birth to phoenixes. Powerful Martial Soul clans formed sects of their own, and their descendants rarely had to worry about awakening some worthless Martial Soul. As for ordinary people, without powerful Martial Souls passed down through their bloodlines, they naturally could not expect their children to awaken good Martial Souls.
Martial Soul Mutation was the only variable. Among such mutations, some commoners soared to greatness, like Ma Hongjun of Grass Chicken Village; others, born to nobility, fell into obscurity because of a Martial Soul Mutation, like Yu Xiaogang.
However, ordinary people had the advantage of sheer numbers. Greater numbers meant more chances for mutation. Whoever could control the Martial Soul awakenings of this enormous common population could control this portion of power, and thus balance the Spirit Masters of the sects and noble factions.
In this era, Spirit Hall controlled all of it. They had gone deep into the countryside and grasped the most direct intelligence and data on Martial Soul awakenings. Top Spirit Master clans such as the Angel Clan, the Golden Crocodile Clan, and the Qian Gu Clan had become Spirit Hall's pillars. Meanwhile, the civilian Spirit Masters who benefited from Martial Soul awakenings made up the greater part of Spirit Hall's powerful Spirit Master legion. That was why Spirit Hall could dominate this era.
One Waste Spirit after another was awakened, but Su Haitao's expression did not change. He had traveled through many villages, and the results were all much the same.
Finally, one child awakened a Wild Boar, and the Crystal Ball of Soul Power lit up with the glow of level two. At this sight, a smile finally appeared on Su Haitao's face.
"Martial Soul: Wild Boar. Innate Soul Power: level 2. Child, you have the qualifications to become a Spirit Master. Are you willing to join Spirit Hall?"
The child said excitedly, "I can become a Spirit Master? I'm willing!"
"Good. Stand behind me. Once the awakenings are over, I'll take you back with me." After speaking, the Steward looked at the remaining children. "Next."
A child with an unusually mature face, wrinkled features, and a slightly shifty appearance stepped into the Awakening Array Su Haitao had set up. Su Haitao activated his Soul Power and helped him awaken his Martial Soul.
A flash of light passed. The boy manifested neither a Tool Martial Soul nor a Beast Martial Soul. It seemed as though nothing had changed at all.
"Where is your Martial Soul?" Su Haitao stared blankly at the child, then activated the Awakening Array again.
Yet still, no Martial Soul appeared.
"How could this be?" Su Haitao was utterly shocked.
"Steward, what's happening to me?" The mature-faced boy began to panic.
Su Haitao pondered for a moment, then suddenly came to a realization. In a regretful tone, he said, "Though your case is rare, it isn't unheard of. According to Spirit Hall's awakening records, a few children without Martial Souls appear every year. I'm sorry, child. You don't have a Martial Soul."
At those words, the boy's face turned pale. The next moment, he lowered his head weakly. In this world, Martial Souls were everything. Even awakening a Waste Spirit was better than having no Martial Soul at all.
When the awakening ceremony ended, Su Haitao bid farewell to Village Chief Tom and left with the child who had awakened level-two Soul Power. The other children who had awakened Waste Spirits all returned home, leaving only the boy who had failed to awaken a Martial Soul sitting blankly on the steps outside Spirit Hall.
Suddenly, a hand patted the boy on the shoulder. He looked up and saw an unfamiliar man.
Huo Qiqiang asked, "What is your name?"
The boy said, "Uncle, my name is Lu Yuan."
"I watched the Martial Soul awakening just now. It seems you didn't awaken a Martial Soul. Would you like me to help you awaken it one more time? What if the Steward made a mistake during the awakening?" Huo Qiqiang took out specialized tools for Martial Soul awakening.
Lu Yuan said excitedly, "Please help me awaken it one more time. I'm begging you."
Huo Qiqiang nodded and activated the Martial Soul Awakening Array. Lu Yuan eagerly stepped into the array, but under Huo Qiqiang's guidance of Soul Power, his Martial Soul still did not appear.
"Still no Martial Soul." Lu Yuan lowered his head.
"Let's test your Innate Soul Power!" Huo Qiqiang looked at the boy. A faint layer of light-element energy hazily covered his skin as he handed the Crystal Ball to him.
Lu Yuan pressed his hand against the Crystal Ball. In an instant, it burst forth with dazzling light, even brighter than the light from the boy with the Wild Boar Martial Soul.
"Your Innate Soul Power is level seven," Huo Qiqiang said.
"I don't have a Martial Soul, yet I can still have Innate Soul Power?" Lu Yuan asked in astonishment.
Huo Qiqiang shook his head. "It isn't that you have no Martial Soul. Your Martial Soul is a Body Spirit."
"A Body Spirit?"
"That's right, a Body Spirit. It is a major category distinct from Beast Martial Souls and Tool Martial Souls. A Body Spirit can be a hand, hair, torso, eyes, nose, mouth—any part of the body. And your Martial Soul is among the most exceptional of all Body Spirits—the True Body of the Incarnation."
