Ch. 221Ex-Machina on a Dimensional Journey
Summary
- The Hassans and Xiu Er: Hundred-Faced Hassan reacts with visible alarm when she encounters Xiu Er, revealing that Xiu Er left a powerful impression on her. Da Vinci teases Xiu Er about having a “special” place in Hundred-Faced’s heart. Cursed Arm is surprised by Hundred-Faced’s behavior, and Yan Zui explains that she has experienced Xiu Er’s overwhelming strength. Hundred-Faced accepts this explanation rather than admit how badly their earlier encounter went. The group then sends away the nine sleeping Mountain People before beginning negotiations.
- The village and the Holy City: While Da Vinci and Xiu Er meet with the Mountain People’s representatives, Fujimaru Ritsuka talks with villagers and learns that the settlement was founded by refugees rejected by the Holy City’s Holy Selection Ritual. Xiu Er’s interruption of the ritual—and the Lion King’s punishment of the refugees—has convinced many that the city is unsafe. The “Angel” who protected them prompted them to flee. Xiu Er has taken some refugees in temporarily and assigned Doppelgangers to keep them calm.
- Ritsuka meets Arash: Wandering alone through the quiet village, Ritsuka is approached by a friendly young man who introduces himself as Arash. Ritsuka recognizes him as the legendary Persian hero and is thrilled, though Arash gently reminds him to keep his voice down. Arash says he came to see the newcomers but trusts them because the Hassans accepted them. He reassures Ritsuka that capturing Hundred-Faced was understandable and praises the group’s ability, while Ritsuka credits Xiu Er for their success. Arash becomes curious about her, and Ritsuka starts enthusiastically describing her—just as Xiu Er arrives and calls him “Senpai.”

Significant themes
The chapter contrasts the Holy City’s exclusion and violence with the village’s refuge and mutual trust. It also emphasizes how legends and powerful figures can inspire hope, while small acts of understanding—such as Arash’s reassurance—help build connections among strangers.
