One way was to bring blessings to the living beings of the Primal Continent and establish meritorious, benevolent deeds. That could earn one a summons from the Immortal Court to ascend and serve as an official.

However, this route took much time and effort. Most people needed to accumulate merits over centuries or even millennia before succeeding.

Another method was far simpler and more direct: slay the vicious spirits wreaking havoc across the Primal Continent, or the great demons opposing the Immortal Court, and one could earn military merit.

Once enough military merit had been accumulated, it would draw the Immortal Court's attention, and one would be summoned to Heaven.

Normally, given his status and standing in the Immortal Court, arranging some minor official post for Song Changming would not have been difficult.

But for Song Changming's future path of immortality, that might not necessarily have been beneficial.

Back when Venerable Abyss had no backing whatsoever, he had charged recklessly through the Immortal Court. He had made many enemies and accumulated all sorts of grudges.

Song Changming had only just entered the Immortal Realm. Rashly choosing a side and becoming too closely associated with Venerable Abyss would only backfire and invite undeserved disaster.
