Background / History
Bai Yan was reborn in Siberia during the Second Honkai War. Cocolia adopted him amid the disaster and subjected him to a Honkai-adaptability experiment; he emerged unharmed and was identified as a Stigmata Awakener. His treatment at Cocolia’s orphanage subsequently improved to that of a biological son. 1
He later escaped the orphanage before Bronya arrived there, leaving her with only secondhand knowledge and a childhood photograph preserved by Cocolia. 11 Feather Rabbit later claims that she was the one who left the young Bai Yan at Cocolia’s orphanage in the first place. 176
Bai Yan entered Schicksal during the Second Honkai War. Though capable enough to earn a perfect written score in his assessment, he deliberately received 59 points in every practical-combat subject and joined the Logistics Department instead of becoming a Valkyrie combatant. 1 2 His later service in Otto’s Intelligence Department is described as forced. 262
Otto and Rita assigned him to infiltrate St. Freya Academy as a new student under a long-term mission: gather intelligence and approach Kiana. He adopted the identity of “Xiao Yan,” allowing him to live and study beside Kiana while concealing both his sex and his actual capabilities. 5 11
Appearance
Bai Yan’s appearance changes extensively with his identities and power use. In his usual male presentation, he wears his hair in a ponytail with a white shirt and black jacket. 260 As Xiao Yan, he presents as a refined young woman; even Jingliu initially cannot determine his gender by appearance alone. 6
- Xiao Yan disguise — Shoulder-length hair, a white hat, and the appearance of a delicate Jiangnan-style young lady. 8
- Combat presentation — Uses makeup, dresses, skirts, and earrings as part of his female identities and former power-amplification method. 18 108 264
- Later appearance — Kiana and Rita note that he becomes taller and more composed after his identity changes. 85
- Fu Yan identity — Often appears in an ice-blue long dress with short hair and a black longsword. 115
Personality
Bai Yan initially prioritizes survival over glory. He deliberately sought a safe logistics position, openly reasoning that high Honkai adaptability would not save him from a Herrscher. 2 Even after becoming powerful, he retains an operative’s instincts: he gathers intelligence beyond his assignment, studies opponents, prepares escape routes, and treats deception as a practical tool. 15 225
He is patient and socially perceptive when dealing with Kiana, tailoring study methods to her weaknesses and encouraging her to improve through experiences rather than lectures. 9 114 However, this care is often intertwined with manipulation; he maintains elaborate false identities, directs people toward conclusions he wants them to reach, and uses puppets or fabricated worlds to control a battle’s emotional and tactical conditions. 102 241
Bai Yan can be ruthless when he believes a greater objective requires it. He considers extreme measures to protect Kiana’s Herrscher identity and later threatens indiscriminate attacks on settlements to force humanity’s evacuation. 168 229 He is nevertheless capable of self-criticism, recognizing that his growing strength had made him arrogant and that his swordsmanship had drifted away from his original caution. 180
Abilities & Skills
Luoshen Swordplay
Jingliu identifies Luoshen as Bai Yan’s suitable sword art: a water-based, formless sword style. Bai Yan accepts the art despite his initial embarrassment over its name and develops it under Jingliu’s instruction. 12
- One Sword Startling Swan — A surprise technique that attacks an opponent’s senses, used to defeat Raiden Mei in a sparring match. 22
- Four Realms of the Sword — Jingliu teaches him that the four realms are situational applications rather than a linear hierarchy; he must choose the proper realm for the opponent. 51
- Sword of Protection — Used alongside improved Luoshen Swordplay to defeat Raiden Mei in their duel. 86
- Adaptive swordsmanship — He can alter his sword style and ultimate move to avoid being recognized as Fu Yan. 180
- Combat precision — His sword thrusts target key points of an opponent’s weapon and can nullify Kiana’s heavier attacks. 236
Hyperdimensional Space
Bai Yan’s core power originates from Hyperdimensional Space, accessed through a “great door.” 72 99
- Can enter a separate space whose duration and scale have increased with his growth. 37 54
- Can open spatial passages and move people or objects through them. 222 233
- Can create Phase Worlds and barriers that trap, isolate, or disorient opponents. 232 241
- Phase Worlds can be configured to exploit an enemy’s weaknesses; Bai Yan trapped Huanluo in a mechanical civilization where her spiritual methods were restricted. 254
- Earlier use was limited by the great door’s opening cycle and restricted time within the space. 37
Wind Authority
After the Gem of Desire becomes associated with his great door, Bai Yan gains power comparable to the Herrscher of Wind. 37
- Forms tornadoes and water columns with destructive force. 37
- Creates a Wind Barrier that conceals his presence and enhances his swordplay. 46
- Uses wind control to achieve optical invisibility, described as a “Physical Shadowless Sword.” 37
- The authority is particularly compatible with his fighting style. 46
Luoshen Transformation
Luoshen Transformation was originally a conditional power increase connected to female dress and Jingliu’s earrings. 19 54
- Wearing both earrings initially increases his strength only inside Hyperdimensional Space. 19
- The effect rises from a 50% increase to an 80% increase as his Hyperdimensional Space develops. 19 54
- His strongest female presentation uses an ice-blue dress and earrings, which Durandal identifies as a distinct high-power form. 108
- After fully fusing with the underlying power, Bai Yan no longer needs cross-dressing to access the amplification. 264
Puppetry, Illusions, and Fabricated Worlds
Bai Yan uses constructed bodies and illusion-based tactics to manipulate perception and control engagements. 102 215
- Creates puppets of himself and other figures, including a Siegfried puppet. 102
- Used a Bai Yan puppet to emotionally manipulate Kiana while preparing an ambush. 102
- Can disguise himself as other people, including Rita, though strong opponents can break the illusion. 215
- Creates fictitious worlds realistic enough to deceive opponents about movement, location, and battlefield conditions. 221 232
Authority Suppression and Finality Power
Bai Yan competes with Kiana for Finality’s recognition and temporarily wields part of its power. 229 233
- Strips Kiana, Raiden Mei, and Bronya of Cocoon-derived powers, reducing them to ordinary Valkyries within their world. 229
- Transfers part of his Finality power to Kiana while retaining what he considers necessary for his plan. 233
- Uses Parallel World art to recreate the Pre-Civilization’s destruction and counter Kiana’s Finality-based attack. 237
- His connection to Finality is unstable; the power begins rejecting him during the conflict. 230
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Longswords and greatswords — His primary weapons, used across both his Bai Yan and Fu Yan identities. 115 130
- Jingliu’s earrings — Initially activate Luoshen Transformation within Hyperdimensional Space. 19
- Phoenix Incineration — Given to him by Kiana for the battle against the Herrscher of Binding. 173
- Crocodile-skin spy bag — Contains a built-in micro-camera supplied by Schicksal Headquarters. 10
- Aha’s mask — The mask he wears is identified as belonging to Aha, the Aeon of Elation. 264
Relationships
- Kiana Kaslana — Initially his infiltration target at St. Freya, then his closest school companion under the Xiao Yan identity. He tutors, protects, provokes, and repeatedly guides her toward self-understanding; after learning his true identity, Kiana asks to know the real him again. 5 9 114 266
- Rita Rossweisse — His superior and handler within Schicksal. Rita assigns and evaluates his intelligence work, supports his cover, and later questions his independent decisions with concern. 5 15 90
- Jingliu — His swordsmanship master. She teaches him Luoshen, instructs him in the Four Realms of the Sword, and remains one of the few people directly connected to his Hyperdimensional Space. 12 51 224
- Durandal / Bianca — A fellow orphanage survivor and recurring sparring partner. Their relationship combines old familiarity, rivalry, and mutual awareness that Bai Yan frequently conceals important truths. 5 190 215
- Bronya Zaychik — Connected to his orphanage past despite never meeting him there. She becomes suspicious of Xiao Yan’s relation to Bai Yan, later agrees to protect his secret, and eventually joins Kiana in pursuing him after his reveal. 11 47 263
- Raiden Mei — Kiana’s protective friend and Bai Yan’s persistent rival. Mei distrusts his influence over Kiana, challenges him directly, and is defeated by his improved Luoshen Swordplay. 13 86
- Cocolia — Bai Yan’s adoptive mother at the orphanage, where she conducted his first Honkai-adaptability experiment. 1
- Feather Rabbit — Claims she left the child Bai Yan at Cocolia’s orphanage; Bai Yan reacts with immediate anger upon hearing this. 176
Story Role / Major Arcs
Schicksal Operative and St. Freya Infiltrator
Bai Yan begins as a Schicksal logistics worker and intelligence asset. After proving his value to Otto and Rita, he enters St. Freya Academy as Xiao Yan to observe the Far East Branch and approach Kiana. 2 5 His cover enables him to become part of Kiana, Mei, Bronya, and Fu Hua’s school life while secretly reporting intelligence to Rita. 11 15 21
Emergence as a Swordsman
While maintaining his deliberately weak school persona, Bai Yan trains with Jingliu in Hyperdimensional Space and develops Luoshen Swordplay. 12 21 His hidden ability becomes increasingly difficult to conceal after Fu Hua recognizes his potential and pushes him into practical training. 18
Fu Yan and Fire Moth
Under the identity of Fu Yan, Bai Yan becomes Fifth Squad Captain in Fire Moth. 160 He recruits, directs, and protects Kiana through the Previous Civilization’s conflicts while concealing his relationship to Xiao Yan and his broader knowledge of events. 135 160 180
Finality Conflict
Bai Yan presents a controversial survival plan involving evacuation to Jarilo-VI and deliberately pushes Kiana and her allies into confronting him. 227 229 Though he appears willing to devastate settlements and strip his opponents of their powers, Mobius later summarizes his goal as saving the world. 229 239 His battles with Kiana become part of her advance toward Finality, with Bai Yan eventually transferring part of his own Finality power to her. 229 233
Identity Revelation and Return
Bai Yan’s layered identities gradually unravel as Kiana, Bronya, Rita, Durandal, and others investigate the connection between Bai Yan, Xiao Yan, and Fu Yan. 180 262 263 He finally confirms that all three are the same person and admits that cross-dressing once multiplied his power. 264 After initially fleeing, he chooses to face his past and return; Kiana accepts the truth and asks to rebuild their relationship from the beginning. 266
