Background / History

Mu En arrives in the wizarding world with little knowledge of its magical system and while burdened by a curse that has turned him into a cat-like being. Living within the moving Moonlight Castle alongside Lucifer, he initially intends to use Harry Potter’s magical potential to investigate the world around him. 2 3

After Harry damages his Moonpetal Flowers while fleeing Dudley, Mu En uses the incident to remove Harry from the Dursleys’ immediate control. He persuades Petunia Dursley to let Harry work at Moonlight Castle for a year as compensation, then becomes Harry’s teacher and protector. 2 4

Seeking to undo his curse, Mu En brews and drinks the Eclipse Elixir, accepting its inherent madness as a possible price for recovery. His later Animagus transformation integrates with his alchemical body, allowing him to become a large silver-white cat while retaining spellcasting ability. 6 26

Mu En later joins Hogwarts as a professor, where his ancient magical knowledge, unusual Animagus form, and practical teaching style quickly distinguish him from the other staff. 53 111 His work expands beyond education into investigations of Dark artifacts, Horcruxes, ancient Greek magic, death magic, and the nature of ghosts. 139 190 247 303

As his influence grows, Mu En becomes the leader of the Cat Party and a major force in British wizarding politics. Though he repeatedly rejects formal political responsibility, Ministry officials seek his approval and guidance after he kills Cornelius Fudge for cooperating with Death Eaters. 300 301 302

Appearance

Mu En usually presents as a tall, sharply dressed man with a feline head, silver mane, and dense fur. His cursed form is specifically compared to a plump silvery-white Maine Coon, though he can briefly manifest a natural human face. 3 7 394

  • His everyday clothing includes fitted suits, knit sweaters, long scarves, wool coats, and hats. 3 7 369
  • His Animagus form is a large silver-white cat capable of retaining its magic. 26
  • His body bears extensive alchemical runes, including connecting runes on his fingers and modifications across his organs and limbs. 249 271
  • During soul projection, he appears in an ancient blue Greek robe with a powerful golden-rune body, a more majestic Maine Coon-like head, and a silver halo. 174
  • He can alter his body for specific environments, including developing gills for underwater exploration. 144

Personality

Mu En is outwardly lazy, sarcastic, and easily annoyed by bureaucracy, fame, and people who refuse to think for themselves. He often presents dangerous or extraordinary actions as “basic operations,” and his calm manner can make his threats more unsettling. 3 301 302

He is highly pragmatic. Mu En believes that magical society is ultimately governed by strength, rejects empty neutrality during crises, and is willing to use intimidation or lethal force against people he considers genuine threats. 10 300 317 However, this ruthlessness coexists with a firm concern for ordinary lives, student safety, and Harry’s ability to make independent choices. 4 152 162 301

As a teacher, Mu En values experimentation, personal responsibility, and developing one’s own magical path rather than copying his methods. He discourages blind ambition and warns that a good intention cannot make a foolish act good. 40 115 270 367

Abilities & Skills

Alchemy and Human Transmutation

Mu En’s body is the product of human alchemy, allowing him to integrate magical formations directly into his physical form. 26

  • Brews specialized potions, including the Eclipse Elixir intended to break his curse. 6
  • Uses Bio-Alchemy and Individual Modification to alter living bodies and teach Harry controlled self-modification. 249
  • Can create enchanted creatures, such as a fire-spitting frog, and demonstrate Magic Power Enchantment on animals. 249 270
  • His modification philosophy emphasizes balance: bodily runes must function as one integrated system rather than isolated enhancements. 271
  • Refuses to make certain Bio-Alchemy knowledge public because it could allow non-spellcasters to gain basic spellcasting ability. 249

Transformation and Physical Adaptation

Mu En’s curse and alchemical body give him transformation abilities beyond conventional wizarding rules.

  • Successfully becomes a silver-white cat Animagus during a lightning storm. 26
  • Retains spellcasting capability in Animagus form, a feat Harry notes is normally impossible. 26
  • Can modify his anatomy for underwater travel by producing gills. 144
  • His curse limits his strength during the early part of the story and drives his efforts to create the Eclipse Elixir. 3 6

Combat Magic

Mu En is an exceptionally dangerous duelist who combines ancient magic, wandless casting, alchemical enhancements, and direct physical force.

  • Deflects a Stunning Spell with a bare-handed slap and creates seven magical spears against a group of attackers. 10
  • Casts Singularity, creating a black-hole-like phenomenon that consumes Knockturn Alley during Harry’s magic riot. The effort leaves him exhausted and asleep afterward. 11
  • Uses illusion magic to create a moonlit sea and meteor shower while dueling Flitwick and Snape; the three-way duel ends in a draw. 111
  • Can strip enemies of their magical abilities through an ancient spell. 146
  • Uses Exile to banish opponents through a spatial vortex. 295
  • Favors direct physical combat when necessary, overpowering enemies without needing to cast a spell. 242 331

Soul and Death Magic

Mu En possesses unusual knowledge of souls, death, and spiritual structures.

  • Projects his soul to teach students about Dark Magic, appearing as a silver-haloed figure whose soul contains no traces of Dark Magic. 174
  • Enters soul realms, confronts soul fragments, and dissolves the fragment contained in Regulus Black’s locket. 132 243
  • Frees the souls of living corpses, allowing them to die as humans rather than remain trapped in undead bodies. 247
  • Studies Hogwarts ghosts and Peeves’s collective consciousness to understand why they cannot leave the school. 303
  • Obtains soul material from Peeves through negotiated exchanges for further research. 325

Formations, Divination, and Spatial Magic

Mu En applies complex magical theory to rituals, arrays, divination, and transportation.

  • Uses Tarot cards for divination and claims that his interpretations can actively bring about luck or misfortune. 22
  • Constructs defensive formations and prepares environmental conditions for complex potions and transformations. 6 17
  • Identifies and activates the Fibonacci Array concealing Bokar Market. 139
  • Uses an unusual form of Apparition and teaches Harry that spatial travel is a “Life Spell.” 145 229
