Background / History
Corazon and Joy Town
Law spent part of his childhood in the Donquixote Family, where he received some training and learned about Haki. Corazon—also identified as Rosinante—became a decisive moral influence on him. Law fiercely defends Corazon’s memory when Doflamingo mocks him and rejects his former desire to destroy everything 172 176 186.
After obtaining the Ope Ope no Mi, Law reached an island where he met his companions and an elderly inventor. Under the old man’s guidance, he chose to become a doctor and use his ability to save people. He subsequently worked in Joy Town on Svalbard Island with Bepo, Pekoms, and Shachi 174.
Capture by Doflamingo
Doflamingo found Law while seeking treatment for injuries inflicted by Yamato. Diamante pinned Law down, while Pica held his severely injured companions hostage. Law agreed to treat Doflamingo only after demanding that the abuse stop; Bepo’s escape gave him some relief 169 172.
Law restored Doflamingo through an organ-replacement operation involving another man. Even as a prisoner, he demanded protection for the people of the island and insisted that the stranger be spared. Doflamingo continued to use Pekoms and Shachi as leverage to secure Law’s cooperation 176.
When Sirius attacked the Donquixote Family, Law tried to obtain the key to his Seastone restraints from Trebol. Doflamingo noticed and attempted to kill him and his companions with strings, but Sirius intervened 179.
Rescue and Loss of the Heart Pirates
Sirius freed Law and offered his ship’s medical facilities for emergency surgery. Despite his own severe injuries, Law operated on Pekoms and Shachi. Neither survived 180 183.
Law then used Doflamingo’s organs to restore the injured father of a boy on Milano Island. The operation also ended Doflamingo’s life and Law’s long-standing fear of him 181.
Returning to Svalbard Island, Law discovered that Buck’s pirates had killed several townspeople who had previously helped him. He fought to protect the survivors, defeating Buck through a carefully prepared electrical attack. Wolff later reminded him that victims were not to blame for being weak and that no person could accomplish everything alone 182 183 184.
Joining the Sirius Pirates
With only Bepo remaining from his former crew, Law joined the Sirius Pirates. Protection was part of his reasoning: the Ope Ope no Mi’s potential to grant eternal life attracted powerful enemies, including the World Government. He also wanted to travel and discover what the wider world was like, while preserving the memory of the Heart Pirates 185.
Sirius trusted Law despite Jack and Maria questioning his motives. He arranged physical and combat training, recommended Hiyori as a swordsmanship teacher, and stressed that Law needed greater stamina to support his demanding Devil Fruit abilities 185 186.
Appearance
- Described as a handsome boy wearing a plush beanie during his captivity on Svalbard Island 172.
- Wears a surgical mask while operating on Doflamingo 181.
- Later carries a katana at his waist and continues to wear a hat 351 395.
- Uses ragged work clothes while undercover among the laborers in the Kingdom of Bridges 229.
Personality
Law’s compassion is rooted in Corazon’s example and reinforced by the kindness he encountered in Joy Town. He protects strangers as well as friends, insisting that Doflamingo spare an unwilling organ donor and refusing to abandon the townspeople attacked by Buck. Losing Pekoms, Shachi, and several local friends leaves him grieving and determined to act 176 182 183.
He is resourceful under pressure. Rather than relying solely on overwhelming force, he conserves energy, exploits the boundaries of ROOM, and encourages opponents to expose themselves. Sirius particularly admires his economical use of Conducting Baton against weaker enemies 183 184.
Among the Sirius Pirates, Law becomes relaxed, dryly humorous, and increasingly confident. He questions the captain’s decision to duel a child, jokes about an obviously mismatched pirate confrontation, and openly mocks an opponent’s slow swordsmanship 186 244 270 396.
His medical interests coexist with a ruthless streak toward dangerous enemies. He taunts Doflamingo before the fatal operation and later removes Wapol’s heart to enforce his warning that the king must treat people better 181 344.
Abilities & Skills
Ope Ope no Mi: ROOM
Law creates a hemispherical operating space within which he can manipulate bodies, objects, and positions.
- Range restriction: His techniques must operate inside ROOM. Buck exploits this by attacking from outside its boundary 183.
- Early mobility restriction: During the Buck fight, ROOM itself cannot move 183.
- Stamina cost: Maintaining the space and repeatedly using techniques rapidly exhausts him, especially while injured 183 186.
- Increasing coverage: Initially unable to encompass the distant Kizaru, he later creates spaces covering more than half a battlefield and nearly half an island 260 395 456.
- Haki resistance: Excessively strong Haki prevents his ability from affecting a target freely 199.
Spatial Manipulation
| Technique | Applications and Limits |
|---|---|
| Shambles | Exchanges positions within ROOM. Law redirects incoming cannonballs into the sea, assists allies in battle, and returns Queen’s plague projectile toward its user 199 399 434. |
| Instantaneous movement | Repositions Law during combat, allowing him to evade attacks, approach opponents, or return behind Sirius after a clash 355 391 396. |
| Conducting Baton | Controls objects and movement inside ROOM. Used to trip pirates, redirect Buck’s liquor, turn severed bodies into projectiles, and force Queen’s modified limbs to aim elsewhere 183 395 434. |
- Uses ROOM to bring the crew past the walls restricting entry to the Goa Kingdom 247.
- Supports the crew’s escape from Redleaf Island by bringing the submarine to meet Sirius 196.
Surgical Combat
| Technique | Effect |
|---|---|
| Amputate | Dismembers targets through his Devil Fruit ability rather than ordinary cutting. He later applies it remotely across a large battlefield 183 395. |
| Scalpel | Removes Wapol’s heart, leaving it beating inside a square, jelly-like enclosure 344. |
| Heartbreak | Delivers a targeted electrical attack deep inside the body. Used against Buck, a Marine Vice Admiral, and Oven 184 355 399. |
- Amputate can be resisted through Haki; Sirius considers it exceptionally dangerous against an undefended target 183.
- Heartbreak attacks internal organs and remains difficult to resist even with Haki 184 355.
- Uses dismemberment to control crowds rather than merely defeat individual opponents 395.
Medicine and Surgery
Law is recognized as an outstanding doctor before joining the Sirius Pirates 174 185.
- Restores Doflamingo’s severely damaged internal organs through transplantation 176.
- Performs emergency surgery on Pekoms and Shachi, though he cannot save them 180 183.
- Successfully transplants organs into the injured father on Milano Island 181.
- Removes the embedded ship’s wheel from Golden Lion’s head 396.
- Seeks medical knowledge from Crocus and obtains Drum Kingdom’s extensive medical records, which Black scans and stores for instruction 312 344.
- Treats Sirius but briefly questions his usefulness after witnessing the captain’s extraordinary recovery. Sirius reassures him that his value as a crewmate is not limited to that task 197.
Swordsmanship and Armament Haki
Law combines sword attacks with spatial manipulation rather than pursuing swordsmanship alone.
- His early swordsmanship is limited; he initially cannot cut objects at a distance within ROOM 183.
- Sirius recommends studying under Hiyori, the ship’s highest-ranked swordmaster 186.
- Develops proficient Flowing Armament Haki and meets Cracker’s Haki-coated sword in an even clash 391.
- Uses powerful Armament Haki to enhance an otherwise ordinary katana 395.
