Background / History

Rocks Pirates and Early Recruitment

Kaido was an intern in the Rocks Pirates before becoming one of the sea’s leading powers. Decades later, Golden Lion judges his strength comparable to that of their former captain, Rocks 460 506.

As captain of the Beasts Pirates, Kaido takes in promising children. He adopts Jack into his crew after the boy loses his parents to slave catchers and helps wipe out the responsible group. Queen also identifies Black Maria as another child Kaido picked up 5.

While visiting a desert island in search of death, Kaido encounters six-year-old Sirius. The boy’s Mythical Zoan abilities, piercing fangs, and potent venom impress him enough to recruit Sirius. He transports the child to Wano, announces him as the future Third Calamity, and entrusts his training to King 2 3 4 5.

Conquest of Wano

Kaido and Orochi deceive Kozuki Oden for five years, giving the Beasts Pirates time to strengthen their forces. When Oden finally moves against them, Kaido ambushes him with thousands of pirates. Their battle lasts three days and devastates the surrounding terrain before Kaido wins through superior endurance 13 16.

After Oden’s execution, Kaido orders the pursuit of his retainers, intending to recruit them or kill them. He then defeats Wano’s remaining daimyo alliance, sparing Shimotsuki Ushimaru because he admires the samurai’s unbroken resolve 24 26.

Kaido burns Oden Castle and leaves King and Queen to prevent anyone from escaping alive. He dismisses Lady Toki’s prophecy and plans to replace Orochi with Yamato once she is strong enough to govern Wano for him 27 28 29.

Yamato’s Resistance and the Next Generation

Kaido’s plans for Yamato conflict with her desire to sail freely. He orders her to execute captured samurai, prompting Sirius to intervene, and violently punishes her declaration that she will leave with her companions 38 39.

For the next three years, Kaido summons Yamato monthly to ask whether she will remain in Wano and become shogun. Her repeated refusals lead to beatings in which Sirius also becomes involved. Kaido later decides to confine her to Onigashima with shackles 54 56.

His investment in talented recruits continues despite this conflict. He obtains the Okuchi-no-Makami fruit for Yamato and, after she refuses his conditional offer, makes it a battle royale prize. He also allows Ulti and Page One to keep the Ancient Zoan powers taken from his collection, provided they prove worthy of them 43 44 53.

Emperor Expansion and Rival Crews

The Beasts Pirates expand into the waters around Wano, conquer islands, and gain subordinate crews. Kaido’s growing territory establishes his reputation as a Pirate Emperor, while King leads expeditions accompanied by Sirius, Yamato, Jack, and Maria 63 64.

Kaido initially expects Charlotte Linlin to stay out of a clash between their crews. He later intervenes when Kizaru nearly kills Sirius. Linlin retaliates by revealing Kaido’s Wano base to Whitebeard, bringing a much larger threat to his doorstep 76 85 89.

Kaido mobilizes his entire fleet against Whitebeard, who seeks vengeance for Oden. The Beasts Pirates ultimately repel the Whitebeard Pirates, although the conflict deepens the hostility between their captains 92 103. Kaido subsequently negotiates an alliance with Doflamingo to sell Wano’s weapons worldwide 112 113.

Capture, Rescue, and Sirius’s Defection

A drunken attack on G-5 Marine Base ends with Kaido captured by Zephyr and Kizaru. High-purity Seastone restraints prevent him from freeing himself while he is transported toward Impel Down. Sirius, Yamato, King, and Queen intercept the prison ship and rescue him 116 117 123.

After returning to Onigashima, Kaido acknowledges Sirius’s help and agrees to let Yamato set sail. Their departure nevertheless becomes another confrontation: Sirius and Yamato fight Kaido, blast him away with Sea Hegemon, and flee into Wano 127 131 132.

Kaido orders a nationwide manhunt with Orochi’s assistance. Sirius’s group eventually defeats King and Queen and escapes the country. Rather than blame King for the failure, Kaido accepts that Sirius has simply become stronger 133 135 140.

Reunion and Expulsion from Wano

Kaido follows Sirius’s rise with anticipation. When Sirius becomes the fourth Pirate Emperor, Kaido looks forward to meeting him again 267.

Their reunion follows Sirius’s victory over Linlin. Kaido demands the captured Road Poneglyph, attacks Sirius and Yamato, and survives a direct railgun hit from their ship. The crew withdraws rather than fight him there, choosing to confront him at Onigashima 404 405.

Kaido joins forces with Linlin against the returning Sirius Pirates. During the Onigashima war, he fights Sirius on the rooftop and demonstrates Future Sight. Sirius, assisted by Black, defeats him; Hiyori permits the surviving Beasts Pirates to leave Wano, ending Kaido’s occupation 425 432 440 441 442 458.

Imu, Exile, and Later Battles

Kaido seeks a rematch when Sirius confronts Whitebeard, but instead battles Dragon during the gathering of powerful pirates. After Whitebeard’s defeat, Kaido attacks the newly arrived Imu without success and is himself defeated. Witnessing Imu’s power motivates him to train harder 458 460 464 465 475.

The Beasts Pirates and Charlotte Family spend the following four years wandering the seas to avoid Imu’s attention. When Sirius and Yamato return, Kaido demands a fight with Sirius, only for Yamato to insist on facing him first. Her evolved Haki and freezing power overwhelm him, including his enormous flame-dragon attack 502 504 505 506 507.

Sirius then teaches Kaido a more advanced Haki training method, and Kaido begins harshly training Ace and Kid in Conqueror’s Haki Infusion. He later fights Moria at Marineford, transports allies to the Sirius, and arrives with Linlin’s forces for the final campaign against the World Government 510 512 524 528 546.

In the final documented battle, Kaido steadily overpowers Sengoku as his Haki transforms. When Sengoku’s Devil Fruit ability fails, Kaido sends him flying and notices that his own ability has become stronger 557 558.

Appearance

  • Human form: An immense, muscular figure described as towering and mountain-like. Sirius jumps roughly five or six meters from his shoulder upon their arrival at Onigashima 2 3.
  • Azure Dragon form: A colossal blue dragon approximately one hundred meters long in his early appearance, surrounded by crimson Flame Clouds 3.
  • Dragon-human form: A smaller combat transformation in which he can wield his mace 94.
  • Distinguishing scars: Several circular scars on his right wrist, left by Sirius’s fangs. Kaido states that they cannot be erased 5.

Personality

Kaido values strength, courage, and unusual talent. He praises Sirius for charging despite his fear, laughs appreciatively when the boy wounds and poisons him, and spares Ushimaru for refusing to break under crushing pressure. His tolerance can extend to enemies, but only while they remain useful or interesting to him 2 26 39.

His encouragement comes with an absolute demand for obedience. He tells Sirius that the sea can accommodate any dream, yet insists that Sirius must not defy him. With Yamato, this becomes outright coercion: he expects her to serve as Wano’s ruler, treats her early awakening of Conqueror’s Haki as natural rather than praiseworthy, and answers her desire for freedom with violence 36 39 54.

Kaido is cunning when sober but highly emotional when drunk. Alcohol contributes to reckless attacks, destructive rages, sudden tears, and repeated captures. He also enjoys sake, feasts, and celebrations, often turning his victories or returns into grand banquets 17 103 116 127 135.

Defeat does not extinguish his competitive spirit. He seeks another battle after losing Wano, becomes excited by Imu’s overwhelming strength, and eagerly welcomes Sirius’s return after four years 458 475 504.

Abilities & Skills

Mythical Zoan Transformation

Kaido possesses a Mythical Zoan ability that allows him to become an Azure Dragon or assume a dragon-human combat form 3 94 557.

  • Transport: Wraps passengers in clouds to keep them secure and carries ships through the air 3 63 546.
  • Physical amplification: Uses his transformation to greatly increase his strength and resist Sirius’s venom 2.
  • Seastone limitation: High-purity restraints suppress him sufficiently that he must rely on his crew for rescue 117.

Dragon Breath and Weather Attacks

His dragon form produces fire, wind, and storm-based attacks 13 54 55.

  • Bolo Breath: Projects a powerful fire blast; used against Oden, Sirius, and the approaching Sirius 13 131 425.
  • Controlled flames: Sets Oden Castle ablaze without immediately destroying the structure 27.

Physical Strength, Durability, and Recovery

Kaido’s physique supports prolonged combat and exceptional resistance to injury 2 16 405.

  • A single mace strike severely injures both Sirius and Yamato 56.
  • His early wrist wound rapidly heals, although Sirius’s fangs leave permanent scars 2 5.
  • He defeats Oden after three days of continuous fighting 16.
  • He withstands Black’s railgun projectile head-on, suffering pain and bleeding rather than incapacitation 405.
  • His powerful vitality allows him to regain some strength after Imu defeats him 470.

Haki

Kaido combines Armament and Conqueror’s Haki with advanced Observation Haki 16 39 432.

  • Armament Haki: Reinforces his weapon and teaches Sirius and Yamato to concentrate their Haki into harder, more effective defenses 16 62.
  • Conqueror’s Haki: Releases pressure that knocks nearby pirates unconscious and cracks the ground 39.
  • Conqueror’s Haki Infusion: Strengthens attacks and creates repelling barriers capable of obstructing Sirius’s bite 131 290 505.
  • Future Sight: Predicts attacks during his rooftop battle with Sirius 432.
  • Known technical gap: Sirius states that Kaido does not know Internal Destruction Armament Haki at that point in the story 147.
  • Later development: Learns Sirius’s method for fusing Armament and Conqueror’s Haki through willpower 510.

Mace Techniques

Kaido fights with an iron mace or spiked club, often reinforced with Haki 16 63.

  • Thunder Bagua: Recognized as one of his signature techniques 15 504.
  • Whistling Arrow: Deflects simultaneous freezing and venom attacks with a ranged impact 55 56.
  • Great Virtue – Fire Dragon Eight Trigrams / Flame Eight Trigrams: Envelops him in an enormous flame dragon. Its later display stretches thousands of meters and has island-shattering potential, but Yamato freezes and breaks through it 505 507.

Combat Instruction and Leadership

Kaido develops talented fighters through demanding instruction and direct combat 5 62 512.

  • Delegates foundational training to King while personally correcting Sirius and Yamato’s fighting technique 5 62.
  • Pushes Ace and Kid toward Conqueror’s Haki Infusion through punishing battles 510 512 557.
  • Commands large fleets, territorial expansion, and subordinate pirate crews 64 92.
