There was a knock on the office door. Schiller looked up from behind his desk, flipped through the appointment records beside him, and said, "Come in!"
"Schiller! Schiller! You've got to help me!!" Gordon, covered in dust and grime, charged in at once. He flicked back the hem of his trench coat, looked at Schiller, and said, "Save Gotham! Professor Schiller! Especially me and your fellow doctors!"
Schiller leisurely flipped through the appointment records and said, "Why didn't you call the appointments office in advance? I'm fully booked today, so I can't have a long talk with you... Unless I cancel an appointment first?"
Gordon frowned and waved a hand. "No need. There's nothing much to discuss. I just hope you'll agree to let Arkham Asylum take in the patients who need antidote injections. We really don't have any beds left!"
Pointing out the window, Gordon said, "Gotham Central Hospital has fewer than five hundred beds in total, and they're completely full. Wayne Hospital is bigger, with two branches and two Inpatient Departments, barely enough to scrape together a thousand beds, but they're all full too!"
"Don't the districts have quite a few private hospitals? If they refuse to admit patients, don't the Twelve Families have anything to say about it?" Schiller asked.
Gordon pursed his lips and shook his head, explaining helplessly, "Normally, Gothamites don't like being hospitalized, so the Inpatient Departments of private hospitals have all been cutting beds. They're profit-driven. If there's no money in it, they won't invest. No one expected a medical resource crisis."
